Probably the same way you find out what size plow the tractor you don't have is going to need in case you decide to buy a plow. Ask people who know, which in that case would be a question I won't have or need to answer.

A good rule of thumb is sit in one and while sitting up against the cantle (back of the seat), allow about a fist amount of space between your crotch and the swell or fork (front, horn area if western saddle). This is also dictated by the riders preference. An average adult might take a 15" (which is measured from the top/front tip of the cantle to the back side of the swell). Now, I like a 14 3/4"-15" & I'm average size. My FIL who's 6'5" and probably 220 lbs also likes a 15" saddle. So we go back to the personal preference. Some like to fit down in their saddle, some don't. Another thing to think about is that different styles of saddles might require you to want a different sized seat. You know, I'm not sure if this really answers your question but it's what helps me to decide.

The best way I have found is to just sit in the seat(on a stand or preferably on a horse). We have 2 16" and 1 17" seat saddles(western style) and we are probably both averageish size(I wiegh about 175). Our average use is trail riding. The 17" is a Tucker gel seat and normally a 17" would be best for somone quite a bit bigger, but it sure doesn't "fit" like a 17" in some of the other brands we tried.

Buy about a half a dozen. One of them will eventually "feel right". That will be more chance than not. The others will fill up the rack on the wall. LOL!
