Your towing rigs and trailers

A 1/2 ton would too only it would ride better, get better gas mileage and cost less. You don't need a heavy duty truck until your over 9-10k lbs with these newer trucks.

I agree 100%. I hear guys on here all the time saying they need a Cummins to pull a John Deere 790 and it has to be put on a 25'GN. Most new 1/2 tons are rated from 11,000# down with most falling in the 9,500# range. My 1/2 ton tows 7,000# just fine.

What you guys need to remember is the new 1/2 tons are twice the truck of the 90's where they had 350 plus cubic inch engines and only 200Hp on a good day. The new trucks have boxed frames, better suspension, and large disc brakes. Works better!

Looks like you're hauling close to 7000lbs, A heavy duty truck... 1 or 3/4 ton should work just fine. Yours looks like my rig and trailer setup. I'm using a gas 3/4 ton F250. Wish I had purchased the diesel. Heavy duty pick up trucks have heavy duty brakes and transmission cooling; great for hills.

It feels like 7000lbs sometimes.

trailer 1600

total 5725lb

My whole rig is rated at 10,150. I weighed in at 10,125. That's is cutting it pretty close. If I stop for a case of beer on the way home, I could be in trouble. I think a new ride is on the shopping list.

I will have to give it to the Nissan. It seems to handle the trailer well with out any drama. It just needs more motor.

The factory rated weights for these pickups are maximums and you certainly don't want to push your truck to the maximum everytime you're hauling your load. Lots of wear and tear, even at 3/4 max load. From your original blog, you mentioned you had a difficult time with hils. A 1/2 ton will have the power, but depending on the weather and the grades you're climbing, your transmission will need cooling... heavyerduty brakes too. I wore out the brakes in my half ton in no time flat hauling 6,000lbs + - going over the Shasta and Siskiyou passes. If your hauling a short distance, then a 1/2 will probably work. If you're hauling long distances over steep grades, I'd give a 3/4 or 1 ton some serious thought. My typical haul is 1300 mi round trip over steep mountain passes.
With our passion for tractors, later, you'll probably find an excuse to go bigger later and need more hauling capability. Looks like you need more toys anyway, good luck!

Awesome setup! Nice truck, trailer and tractor. I would have gone for the ct450, but I would have then had to buy a new trailer and diesel truck. Perhaps I can convince the wife in a few years.
