When I was sent to Evanston, IL, to the Northwestern University Traffic Institute in the Fall of 1971, I was surprised to see beer and wine in the supermarkets. We didn't have that in Texas. We also did not have liquor by the drink. You could get beer and wine, but if you wanted anything stronger, you had to "bring your own bottle". Before I returned to Texas in June, 1972, was when they started allowing liquor by the drink. And of course, we don't have state liquor stores; they're privately owned.
And now . . . liquor stores are open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and closed on Sunday. We still have local option, so we still have a number of "dry" areas, but generally, supermarkets, convenience stores, etc. have beer and wine. They can't sell alcohol before noon on Sunday, but can sell it after noon.
