ksimolo, But I suppose hydraulic fluid leaking by could wear them.

Actually, it's the particles smaller than the 10 micron filter medium that do a lot of the wear in hydraulic systems.

Can you take some pictures of the repair/parts, and tell us if you can visually see any wear, etc.

Well, i plugged and capped the cylinder I thought was bad and that let me turn the tractor some and get it into the barn. One busted pipewrench later (snapped the handle - it was a HF special), i got the cylinders apart and a friend and I rebuilt them. It was much easier than I thought it would be but it helped that he knew what he was doing and had the tools to make it even easier.

One of the O-Rings on the piston was broken, the other was partially out of its groove. The o-rings in both cylinders had lost their flex and were in bad shape. There was some signs of wear on the bad piston from oil with crud flowing by.

Put it back together and it works great. Looks like i will be doing the lift cylinders soon.

I did not have a small enough hone (nor did Sears) to hone the cylinders. So I will probably end up doing this sooner than i otherwise would need to.

I took some pictures of it as we took it apart - my camera is dying souch that i have to turn it on and off several times until it will take one picture so I do not have as many as i would like. When i get a chance, I will post them.

Hey Ken, is that a Canon camera?

My old one just died, about to throw it away, and found a recall notice. Turns out Canon bought bad chips and will "replace" your camera for free...

Glad the swap went well. Not surprised on the cylinders being hard to pull apart. The guy who did mine used a torch and a 4 ft pipe wrench and could not get it apart. Took two guys and an extender. THey were telling me I had to buy new cylinders when it popped...

Here is a link to a quick page I threw up of the cylinder rebuild:

USA Discount Generators - Standby and Portable Gillette Generators

If i ever get motivated, i will do a better job with part numbers etc.

And yes Carl, it is a Canon. I found a bizarre fix on the web that seems to work - take a long picture and remove batteries during the middle of it. The aperture gets stuck with an oily substance from a part deteriorating and this seems to force it open for a while. Tried a few hours ago and so far so good.

Service Notice: CCD Image Sensor Advisory (Updated Oct.31, 2006)

It has come to our attention that the vendor-supplied CCD image sensor used in certain Canon digital cameras and digital video camcorders may cause the following malfunction: When the product is used in recording or playback mode, the LCD screen and/or electronic viewfinder may exhibit either a distorted image or no image at all. While reports of this malfunction have been rare in the United States, we have determined that it may occur if the product is exposed to hot and humid environments.

Affected products:
- Camcorders: ZR60, ZR65 MC, ZR70 MC, ZR80, ZR85, ZR90, ELURA 40 MC, ELURA 50
- Digital Cameras A60, A70, A75, A300, A310, S230, SD100, SD110, A40(*), A80(*), A85(*), A95(*), S1 IS(*), S60(*), S200(*), S330(*), S400(*), S410(*), S500(*)
*Models added as of Oct.31, 2006

Malfunction:
It has been confirmed that the connecting parts of the internal wiring of the CCD used in affected products may become disconnected, especially if the affected products are stored or used in high-temperature and high-humidity environments. If this occurs, the signal is not output from the CCD normally in Shooting Mode, which may cause a distorted image or the absence of an image. This malfunction can be confirmed on the LCD monitor screen during shooting. The same malfunction also appears on the recorded image.

Canon's Response:
Effective immediately, and regardless of warranty status, Canon will repair, free of charge, the products listed above exhibiting the above-mentioned malfunction if Canon determines that the malfunction is caused by the CCD image sensor.

Unfortunately, my camera is a 2S IS - the 1S IS is covered but they say only 1% of my cameras have the problem so they will not cover it.

I have been having problems with my steering - sometimes you can turn the wheel a few times before anything happens. But i was in the middle of abig job and i hoped to finish it first. However, now turning the wheel does nothing. Right before it died, I could turn right but not left then all of sudden left but not right.

My guess is the steering valve is shot or one or more of the cylinders is leaking internally. I will have to get some caps and plugs and see if isolating one cylinder lets it function. Can't remember if they are 3/8" or 1/4" JIC so i guess i will get both.

If I am missing something I should be looking into, please let me know.

I believe sedgewood has the right line of thinking one of the steering cylinders is bypassing bad enough that it isn't doing anything and all the oil is just being pumped in a circle and since there is no resistance on that side the other side isn't getting any pressure to do the intended work, both cylinders might be bad, but hopefully not. Hope you get it fixed soon. Capping off the hoses on one side and then the other will let you know if you have one good cylinder or not. If my suggestions sound nutty you don't have to try them, and remember hydraulics is or can be dangerous. You have a big machine so I wouldn't try to work with just one cylinder, but one cylinder might help you get it to a good place to work on it, just a thought.

Unlike you I made my guess without attempting to diagnose the situation and guessed wrong :) It was a broken seal in a steering cylinder.

PT-1845 Repairing Loss of Steering Input

Anyone have a source of cylinder seals that bypasses Power-Trac's silly $50.00 minimum order policy?

Sedgewood

When I first read your post I didn't read the attachment and then made my last post and then I read the attachment and at first I thought you had found the problem in the steering valve until I read farther down, I was about to make a totally disregard my last post when I read farther on down the post and your conformation of what I thought you were saying. I kinda had to chuckle at myself on that one.

I've rebuilt my cylinders 3 times in 7 years. I only put about 100 hours per year on the tractor. I seem to have more problems than most in this regard. Next time, I'm thinking about upgrading to some of those nice Surplus Center cylinder's with swivel ends. I'm "betting" they are better made that the PT cylinders. By the way, PT makes these cylinders themselves.

The o-rings were all dried out and hard in mine. The cylinders' removable ends had a gouge in them - not sure if from when they were made or if the marks occurred when they had been rebuilt once before. Mine is a 2003 that I bought used. If your o-rings have not gone hard, then you might want to hone your cylinders next time if you have not been doing so.
