I want to ask if you plan on a front, mid or rear pto. I have a Wheel Horse D-250 that has a all the pto's on it. The front and mid PTO is on a belt pulley off the front engine crack pulley with a hand clutch to engage the PTO for a snow blower or mower and etc.

No PTO planned at this time. In the future I could add a large pump and do everything with hyd's.

Since you have the engine inline with the vehicle axis, you could also use a belt driven PTO with splined ends at the front and rear.
Hydraulics are expensive and need cooling. And arent compatible with standard farm implements unless you make a hydr. motor mount on each of them.

Something like this PTO motor from Surplus Center would make it compatible with any standard farm implement.

Thanks, thats exactly what I had in mind!
However, see the flow? I guess I would need a pretty big pump to run that.

The specs show 800 RPM at 17 GPM, so you'd get 540 RPM at about 11.4 GPM (still a pretty healthy flow).

Depending on how much HP you want to put through it, you'll need some pretty hefty flow anyway.

At 2000 PSI (typical hydraulic system pressure for most tractors) @ 11 GPM, you'd have approx 14.6 HP available at your PTO; which is plenty for some tasks, but you may want more, depending on what your needs are.

Yeah. That's pretty high flow, but if you run your pump directly off the engine it doesn't take a very big pump to get some big flow.

This one puts out 17 GPM at 1800 RPM and it's under $100.

Would it be cheaper to have a drive shaft that run down the frame with a few carrying bearings. Have electric clutch pulley, off a car air conditioner on the front drive belts to engage the pto.

It might be, but not by much unless one could find something used to substitute.

While this certainly could be done, I would have wanted to design it from the git go. I could add it now but it would appear a bit "tacked on", and that's OK as long as its serving a purpose, however that's not how I like to do things.
Like IPfarmer said unless you had a bunch of surplus stuff it may not be cheaper. Also I don't think a car air cond. clutch would be up to the long term task.:)

Here a few pics on how my Wheel Horse front and mid PTO pulley.

I built a tractor / mud buggy this way using a Honda Civic motor with the auto trans (welded diff) and a set of full size chevy diffs (also welded) but I offset both pinions to the right. Loads of torque and a top speed of 30 MPH.. works awesome.

That thing is cool! Now you need a captains chair from a conversion van, some cup holders, and a rear facing bench seat for passengers. :D

That motor develops about 29 HP, and the pump used to drive it would take about 34 HP to drive the pump, that is assuming a pump to motor efficiency of 85%

If the motor can turn 2500 rpm, to pump 17 GPM would require a pump of 1.6 cu in. If the motor can run faster, the pump displacement can decrease down to 1.1 cu in

My engine is 50HP so I should be good to go, if I decide to do that?
