Has anyone taken a stab a converting a side discharge finishing mower to rear discharge? I have a older 72" Befco mower that I like because of its simple & heavy construction. I would really like to have the benefits of a rear discharge though. Any tips on converting?

I think that would be very helpful. Please note of all of the blades turn the same direction. Thanks

My 72" Woods RFM is apparently both a side and rear. The only difference I see is that the rear side lip is not as deep as the sides are. Also, I take off the side chute and cover it with a plate that is the same (except mirror) of the other side. Underneath, there is very limited baffling, and almost nothing at the rear. Without pictures of what you have it's tough to suggest what to do, but here's my take
1) Make sure the rear side is shorter than the sides, so the grass can get out the rear. Mine is about 2-3" less.
2) Make sure there is limited baffling extending into the rear area. Mine probably doesn't extend past about a 4-o'clock position.
3) Place a cover or plate over the side discharge chute so the inside surface is smooth and there's not a place for grass to wad up.

Good luck. Although not perfect, I think you'll be surprised at how much of a windrow-less (is that really a word?) result you will come up with.

See if this helps. The blades all turn the same direction. This mower came with my M5400 when I bought it used 2 years ago. I have never used this mower. As you can see it has blades missing. I have all the parts and pieces to fix it. Since I have a ZTR I have never gotten around to fixing this, just too busy with other things.

Mark - those pics are very interesting. I'm a little surprised at how far to the rear the baffling runs. It looks like about 1:00 position on 1, and 2:00 on the other.

Looking at the picture - do the blades turn CW, or CCW?

As seen in the pictures they all turn counter-clockwise. If you look at pic 2 the tip of the blade pointing to the 5 o'clock position the leading edge is to the right. The trailing edge is curled up at the backside.

I agree the baffles and blade rotation doesn't seem right. Like previously stated I have never used this mower. So I have no idea how it cuts.

To bad that the big Befco is in Georgia. Thanks for the pics though. It looks like I can leave the existing side discharge baffles in place and add to them. If djradz can come up with a pic of his Woods mower that will help also. There doesn't seem to be very many good pics on the manufacturer's web sites.

What would be the advantage to a rear discharge mower ? I like the side as I can discharge the heavy grass / leaves in a pile to cut again or pickup with less raking.

Rear leaves no piles. Also does not blow it on the drive and in the flower beds. You can also get up close to trees and fence lines with both sides without turning around.

Here is a pic of my 2 year old Caroni 6' rear discharge. I upgraded from a 5' King Kutter at the beginning of last season. Much better design and gives me all the advantages I listed above.

Yeah I've got an older Woods RM360 that I've been playing with. I did the conversion late last year and tried it out when the grass wasn't growing much. First thing I noticed is on the far left blade(previous discharge was on the far right blade, I'll call this blade 1 looking at the mower from the rear), the discharge was hitting the wheel and causing a windrow. A simple fix as I made a bracket to move the wheel further out.

Two weeks ago I went up to mow and the grass was pretty high. The blade 1 was fine but I was getting some windrowing between blades 2 and 3. Remember 3 was the discharge side.

I made a couple mods, I made the baffles to sit at or just below the blade height, thinking this might help the flow. My ground is rough...not a clean yard...and one baffle got pushed back a bit and the blade was tapping it. So I took the torch and cut the baffles to just above blade height. Didn't help the windrowing but the cut was better, I think the baffle was holding the grass over some. Next I cut out the baffle that ran further down than the other ones (see pic, in the pic the doschargr was on top, blades turn CCW). No help either. All this while Blade one is working perfect.

We are heading up on Saturday and I should have a good stand of grass. To continue working on it, I going to cut off the back of the mower. You can see in the pic I just bent it up. It's actually still at cut level so it would seal off the air flow. What you don't see in the pic is I already cut off sections by the wheels, because I didn't notice that when I back up, the wheels would hit the part I bent up. Then we;ll see what happens. I was alone last time I mowed so I couldn't stand behind the mower and see what was going on. This weekend I will have a driver. Just typing here I also didn't try to lift the mower and see what happened.

These are good pics that folks are posting...except they don't make much sense because both are different!!! :) I stopped off at a TSC yesterday and looked under one of there gold ones. King Kutter I guess. It had the baffles like mine on the outside, but in the middle only a 1" deep baffle. Very wierd, very different. I hoping on mine it was just air getting trapped. Only other thing I can think of is you can see the deck of the woods has a channel in the front that the grass went through. The baffles were in the rear, your basic U shapes from about 4 to 8 o'clock. My baffel goes into the channel but it's a good couple inches taller than the rest of the deck. I might have to level that off with another piece of plate.

I started this mod because the baffles in the mower were torn up and the grass was just clumping out of the rear. Also the deck had some holes in it that can see I covered with some plate. The mower is 10 years old now and was used in a commercial operation for the first 7 years.

We'll see what happens this weekend.

Rob
The windrowing is in the last pic, I think I actually went over that place twice. The windrowing is not as bad as the clumping once the grass dries out.

After some more searching on the web, I found a new video of a Befco mower. It looks like the pics in Marks post are of an older Befco mower, however they are still using the same baffle design. Couple small changes to mine...basically some etensions on some curves and I'll ahve a match.

That'll probably be as good as it gets for me. In the front of the house I would only mow one way blowing the grass away from the house. Looks like a rear dischage is going to leave it there and not mulch it very much. Not a problem if you can mow it once a week but if it gets high it'll leave it on top.

Hmmm, well I'm not going back!

Wow, that's a lot of baffling. My Woods RM 306 only has two baffles for the middle and far left blade (opposite the shute), and both are rather minimal. Nonetheless, I really don't have any problem with windrowing. Sorry I don't have any pictures, but if you are interested, I could get some. The baffles only extend down from the deck about 2-1/2" and nowhere near to the bottom of the blades, which are probably another couple of inches lower.

I'll take all of the pics that I can get. It sounds like there is certainly more than one way to skin this cat. RobJ, I will apreciate it if you can post a link to the Befco video.

Are you describing a rear or side discharge. Sounds like a side discharge. There wasn't much in my RM360 for side discharge either.

Pics are always helpful!

Mines working a lot better now since I added the baffles to match the Befco mower. It does sling and spread it out some. Probably isd good as it gets. It probably works better if you don't let the grass get to high, which being a weelend place is sometimes difficult for me. You can see from the poor video that I will need to move the other wheel. The discharge on the left wheel(looking at the video), is blocking the clippings from being tosses out. I already moved the other side, simple L bracket.

I got the mulching kit for my Woods PRD6000 for this reason. Also, no chains in the back, it's solid.
