almost no one welds with the welder on high, plus as you said, the duty cycle probably has more to do with it than anything.

Welders (I don't know about plasma cutters) can have smaller wire for some reason. It's probably the low duty cycle. I believe (don't quote me and double check) you can use #10 on a 50 amp circuit. Sounds a little crazy to me.

Bob,

Here is the wire size calculator. It looks like 55 amps requires a #6 for a run of 60 ft.

Cancel the above data. The 55A is cutting amps.

Cutting at 55A, at 50%, requires an input of 30A. therefore #10 wire.

Cutting at 40A, at 100%, requires 23A. #12 would do it, but #10 is what I have in my 60 ft run. So I am good.

Sometimes it takes awhile to get me going.

my uncle just finished a house for an 87 year old man from church. And I set his boilers and run the plumbing. we used a 2 element titan water heater and the guy loves it.

I didn't like it at first but now I think it is the only way to got for low water usage buildings.

Wire Size Calculator

Just to be picky (sorry) the disclaimer says this is for voltage drop calculations, not maximum current. To Quote "This Calculator will determine the minimum size conductor needed based on a 3% Voltage Drop. It does not take into consideration other factors such as minimum ampacity based on the National Electrical Code Table 310-16. (Allowable ampacities of conductors). Consult The NEC for further details"

#10 is good for 30 amps there in table 310-16. I am not an expert on this by the way. I looked up Arc welders in the code section 630-11. The supply conductors sizing is based upon the duty cycle of the welder. Please look at this secton. The lower the duty cycle the higher the circuit breaker can be set. Let's hope no one decides to buy a higher duty cycle welder and use the same wire.
