In some locations the climate is such that chickens must remain cooped up during the winter months. After having the pleasure of cleaning the chicken house all winter many would formulated some very distinctive opinions on "The Joy Of Chickens" !

Well, I am battling the opinion of SWMBO that chickens stink. I understand they will have a smell, but if you work to keep them clean and the coop clean.

Winter here would suck..... It starts getting cold in late November and we have snow from December to February.....

Worse case, we have chicken soup and canned chicken if things get to bad:D

I hope you meant my thread when you mentioned Tony....It's nice to see that what we post here may be of value to people long after we finish our little adventures.

I highly encourage you to at least get a small flock of a few hens.

Yes Tony, it was you. I enjoyed that thread. It sucked to hear about the dogs....

My wife has some chickens[5-8] that are probably 10-12 years old,no lie.

Already told her once these chickins died,we wasn't getting any more, but they won't die,,

I guess I have never experienced the smell or the cleaning part. I have them in a mobile chicken tractor that gets moved before there's anything to smell. ;) Ooops, left that off of my list of chicken chores... I do move the chicken tractor a few feet about twice a week.

No one endeavor is for everyone.
Some people don't want to live without animals, others can't stand the responsibility, or already have enough.

There is a little work, a safe place is a must for chickens at night time. If you free range them you might have to put up with some chicken damage to a vegetable, or flower garden. Forget about going barefoot in areas they frequent. Enjoy the eggs and the show they put on.:)

Hey Greenmule, share you tips on chicken keeping! You must be an expert given they won't go away! :D:D

mine are free range, have no fenced pen and always come back to the coupe at dusk on there own.

The only problem we have has been a neighbor dog that has been known to attack chickens in the past got half of my flock over 2 weeks. After the second attack on my chickens he was no longer a problem.
