I am finally looking at used trucks. What is the latest year model I can buy without the convertor burn system on it? I am leaning towards dodge but tell why I do and don't want one. The V-10 ford has done well but ford has used too many different engines and I've heard horror stories on duramax. Please no war but let me hear why. Thanks in advance.

"late '07" is the last year to get a non-DPF truck.

None of the trucks are bad, they all do about the same thing as well as each other, some do some things better and some are worse. There's no clear winner. If there was, nobody would buy the lesser brand.

Best thing to do is look carefully at your situation and buy what suits your needs and budget without worrying about the brand of truck.

Brand loyalty is stupid, but I'll forewarn you, you're about to read some posts that are clearly brand loyal.

I don't know about Ford or Dodge but Chevy started installing DPF (diesel particulate Filters in the late 06 models. I had an 05 which did not have it. My 07 does have it. I think all of them were mandated to install such a device starting in 06. Supposedly it produces fewer emissions. It did however knock down the mileage. I'd say a safe bet would be an 05 model. Don't know what horror stories you've heard about the Dmax. Other than lower mileage I don't have a problem with mine, in fact the 07 horsepower is up almost 60 HP over the 05 along with torque. Just an FYI, my 05 got 20 MPG empty and 14.5 -15 MPG towing 7K. The 07 gets 15.5 empty and about 12 towing the same load.

My Favorite Dodge is the 2000-02 w/24v Cummins, got good mpg vs power & very reiliable and sounds sweet with a straight pipe. Other than that I like the 7.3 1997-2002 Fords.

The DPF came later than '05. My GMC is an '07, but doesn't have the DPF. They call it a "classic". I bought my truck exactly 2 years ago (March '07). You can buy GMC or Chevy with no DPF into the '07 model year

I didn't see a DPF in any light truck until spring of '07.

Personally I don't think you can go wrong with any of the Dodge Cummins trucks. Anything that is the first half of 07 or earlier is a 5.9, that is the engine you want. It has no emissions control devices, other then a Cat on the 04.5 - 07 HO motors.

The older 12 valves from 89 - 93 and 94 - the first half of 98, are getting harder to find but they make highly reliable vehicles and can pull a trailer with the best of them. The 12 valves have a fully mechanical fuel injection system so its very easy to make them go fast without a lot of money. The electronic-mechanically injected 24 valve engines, 98.5 - 02, make good power in stock form for an excellent daily driver or strictly a tow vehicle. There are known issues with the lift pumps dieing and then in turn causing the injection pump to die, but it's not as bad as it sounds. A simple fuel pressure gauge will allow you to monitor this and catch it before it happens. Don't let this discourage you from 98.5 - 02 in anyway.

In 03 Dodge introduced the trucks with a new version of the 5.9 with a high pressure common rail injection system. One of the most notable features of this design is it eliminated the "diesel loudness" that the previous generation of 5.9's had. In the 04.5's, this same engine was then upgraded to a total of 325 hp/600 ft. lbs. and then later was further upgraded to 610 ft. lbs.

As far as other manufacturers go, Ford use to have the 7.3 Powerstroke in there trucks from 94 - 03. Any of those trucks make reliable vehicles, though the intercooled version of the 7.3 is the best IMO. The horror stories your referring to are probably of the 6.0 and personally I wouldn't touch one with a ten foot pole. Some people have had good luck with them but a lot haven't, I wouldn't take the risk.

If you are looking at Chevy then you can't go wrong there either IMO. The Duramax is a nice engine and the Allison transmission is like the Cummins of light duty pick-up transmissions.

IMO The ford 7.3 diesel is the best and most reliable ever made. I have a 1996 F-350 and a 2002 F-350 and both have given many troublefree miles. I have heard some scary stories about the 6.0's but don't know anything about the 6.4's. The only thing I've had to do to the 96 is rebuild the transmission.very dependable trucks.

Does the 2007 6.7 Cummings have the filter system on it. I've found a 3500 mega cab priced in my range. As I've said earlier the F350 with V-10 has served well but it is time for an upgrade. The horror stories I'm refering to is I have 3 buddies with Duramax and there was 4 engine failures between them (they are the early models).

All the 6.7 Cummins engines have emissions equipment. What kind of engine failures on the Duramax's did your buddies have?

Something with the injector system, filled the crankcase with diesel and the engines burned rod bearings and one blew a head gasket run all the water out. Warranty covered all the repairs.
