Hello I'm new here to the forum and glad I found it. I have a TC35 NH tractor and was thinking about getting a tiller for it. I have some landscaping I want to do around the house. I also thought about just getting a walk behind, although that would certainly be more work. If anyone has any thoughts I would appreciate it. And I would like to know some good brands to go with should I get one. I would probably look for a decent used one. Thanks

*You can't back a walk behind into a pile of dirt like this .
I do that a lot with my 3 point tiller when doing landscaping work..

Are you planning ongoing landscaping work? If you are just going to landscape one yard and then be done, you might consider renting as well.

I use my tiller as much as any other implement I have. I till my garden and a bunch of others in the neighboorhood every fall and every spring.

what type of landscaping are you looking to do ? Would you need to use tiller at least twice a year ?

The rear 5' tiller is nice. i have one for my TC33... It does a killer job on the garden plots, but its only good for large areas. There are a number of times i still wish i had a walk behind for doing smaller projects around the property i just cant get the tractor into.

But for those i have my mantis which i make work with a little old fashion elbo grease.

Welcome to the forum, radioman. I hope you find it helpful...

What I do for my neighbor's is I let them pay me what they think the work is worth. Their gardens are not huge and it takes all of 10 minutes to till it, 2 or 3 times. Many of my neighbor's are elderly and are on a fixed income who can not afford to pay an outlandish price to have someone till the small gardens they have, I don't feel right doing that. My dad used to say "it's neighbor helping neighbor" and the rewards far outway any money one can make from such a small deed. Roger

Absolutely!

Either a plate of cookies or a few dozen ears of corn. ;)

I'm going on the erroneous assumption that if I don't charge, I'm not a commercial operator, and I can get away without an umbrella liability policy. I mostly do it for fun and as a favor to others. Some will offer to pay for my fuel. I'm sure to tell them it's not necessary, but some insist. To me it's just good seat time. I've actually learned a bit about gardening by talking with the people who have me till their gardens.

I do the same plowing driveways. I've done enough late night noisy work that I feel like I ought to do something to help my neighboors see the tractor as a good thing rather than just noise and diesel exhaust.

Wow, Thanks everyone for your input. OK I'm going to just do my own work around the house. I will be putting in a couple of flower gardens by the driveway. And some plantings around the front and back of the house. I don't think I will have a veg. garden at least not right now. But I could see where a 3pt hitch tiller could be very nice for tilling up some nice top soil to use in a flower garden. Or to back into a pile of dirt like Lbrown59 pointed out with the nice pics. I'm thinking once I get the landscaping done (3pth style) then I would be more ap to use a walk behind. I have also thought about putting in some black berry bushes too. Does anyone have a brand that they like or ones to stay away from ?

Iplayfarmer - There is nothing like fresh cucumbers, corn, etc... is there? One neighbor makes me a wonderful strawberry/rubbarb pie. Oh, can she cook. Of course, I tell her it's not necessary, but I'm not turning her away either. Roger

Troy horse you can probally find a good used one somewhere this is a rear tine tiller all cast iron construction. (you can even back it up to a pile of loam)

You both need to be sure your insurance covers you when doing this.

Most home owner policies base coverage on where the tractor is and not on how it's used.

I went threw the same thought process last year, walk behind tiller or 3 point tiller.A good walk behind tiller is around $1000-$1500 the 3 point tiller I bought was $1850.The 3 point tiller is a better choice IMHO.coobie

I know that it doesn't. But, it wouldn't cover me with a shovel on another guy's place either. It wouldn't cover me if I was fixing my neighboor's doorknob, and it wouldn't cover me if I were mowing my neighboor's grass whether with a tractor or with scissors. I don't let that stop me from fixing doorknobs, mowing grass, or shoveling steps. I don't let that stop me from tilling gardens either.

I have a Landpride 3pt tiller that I bought used. It needed a set of tines and a couple of seals replaced on the chain case. Since then it hasn't complained, even when I ripped a root the size of my arm out of the ground while tilling the garden of a friends Mother. Can't beat the job a tractor mounted tiller can do and it is way easier on the operator.
I work for food too:D. All of my neighbours know how I like steak BBQ'd:cool:

Thanks everyone, I'm thinking that I'll go with the 3pth one. I'm sure it will go to good use.

I have a walk behind, but I wish I had a 3 point. When I bought it I didn't have a tractor. My walk behind is a smaller rear tine that is self propelled. It is a lot of work but not as bad as the ones with the tines in front. It does a good job but just takes some time. I just don't use one enough to justify buying a 3 point. In my area, it seems tough to find good used CUT attachments.

I had a grey market tiller with a grey market tractor for a while and it worked well. I now have a Befco tiller with my Massey 1215. I like the Befco tiller.

I can't say if it's any better or worse than other major brands since I haven't used other major brands, but it does what I need it to. It was used when I got it, but the tines were all new. It digs pretty well in hard ground. I've even broken sod with it. If the ground is moist, it breaks up the sod surprisingly well.
