New SIG 556 Hog Rifle

Yeah I hate the term "assault rifle". When anyone asks I tell them I own no assault rifles but I do have 3 "defense rifles", 2 AR15s and an AK :D

I'm concerned that in the near future it may become difficult to purchase and own semi-automatic rifles because of the ignorant media wrongfully using the scary sounding term "assault rifle" and getting people who don't know better to repeat their incorrect description. I'm not going to get political at all, but I'm a firm believer in our 2nd Amendment rights and try to undo some to the misconceptions begun by the media and repeated by others who don't know better. Unfortunately, I believe the incorrect media may come out ahead really soon on this matter.

Since I like the way the gas operated piston system, somewhat similar to AK rifle, works in the Sig 556 I ended up buying the Sig 556 DMR for longer range plinking. The gas-piston/op-rod design has proven very reliable over the years. And, obviously, Sig has a history of manufacturing superior quality firearms. Which, unfortunately, has me looking hard at the Sig 556 pistol. I don't need it, but it sure makes one heck of a pistol. And, with the current political climate, they may not be available forever. My son attended RIP school this last summer at Ft. Benning and said he saw some sort of really short Sig rifle that looked like a pistol that shot the 5.56 round. I wonder if that wasn't the Sig 556 pistol.

Anyway, great shooting SkyPup. With the cost of ammo these days (which may rocket up even more really soon), you need one shot one kill. I have the same holo setup on my regular 556 but have a scope on my 556 DMR. I can't tell you if it really is more accurate or not since I haven't had time to setup a bench on my range and just compare the two. Obviously the regular Sig 556 shoots plenty well. :)

Apologies, however once a discussion about guns starts on this forum, it is political, for better or worse, particularly when you want to get into the "definition" of an "assault rifle".

Fact is though that since most of the people that ferequent this site live out in the "country", owning firearms is an "accpetable way of life" for most of us, myself included.

Ok, please explain to me how it is "political", as you say, when threads discuss what type of round is better for taking a deer at 200 yards. I fail to see the logic in the above quoted statement of yours as well. I'm sorry if I offended you by correcting you earlier when you incorrectly called a semi-automatic Sig 556 an "assault rifle", but not every conversation about firearms is political just the same as not every black colored auto loading rifle is an "assault rifle". I feel nothing further can be gained by trying to help you educate yourself by providing links for you to read so I'll not get off topic any further by trying to help you understand firearms and firearm terms. I'll now opt to just stay with the facts as I have, but I'll refrain from respond to your posts in this thread as doing so wonders off topic. You can call cartridges 'bullets' and magazines 'clips' and I'll not make any correcting comments. ;)

Besides, I looked at the Sig 556 pistol too much and just bought one.

Okay Boyz, just to put an end to the high capacity semi-automatic military assault rifle debate....

This morning, Saturday October 25th, I invited a friend of mine from Central Florida up to spend the night and go hog hunting in the morning with me (the wife is out of town).

I gave him my Ruger #1 Single Shot 7mm Rem Mag with Leopold 2-10X Scope on it. He's never shot a hog in his life, only a couple of pheasants.

Woke up at 6:30AM to take the five dogs out and saw three deer in the backyard, came in to cook breakfast and sent him out behind the barn to stand watch in my tree stand. Five minutes later he comes runnnig in the house telling me there is a hog in my backyard. Grab the Ruger and SIG and head out.

One minute later, he's my guest, I tell him to take the hog and I will shoot immediately after him for backup....

One shot from the Ruger and 0.1 seconds later one shot from the SIG and the hog drops in its tracks at 100 yards.

He's on his way home now and going shopping for a new freezer tonight! :D

Here he is with his first hog and my Ruger #1:

Did I mention he has a HUGE smile on his face!?! :D

Okay, if I see you coming my way with that grapple empty, I'm running the other direction!! It appears as if that grapple is a bad omen from what I see... :D

I just bought an AR-10 .308 for shooting hogs. It turns out that it shoots better groups than my 257 weatherby. I'll probably take all my deer this year with the AR. It seems like it would be more humane to use my most accurate rifle.;)

In my avatar, the AR to the far top right is an Armalite AR-10A4C! It's very accurate. It's not a "tack-driver" by any means, but will hold a consistent 2" group at 100 yards if I do my part. It loves "white box" Federal XM-80's with NATO headstamps, 149grain, FMJ.

Skypup, I'm so glad you posted that pic in order to make this thread a "tractor" related subject.

I sold my AR-15 about 6 years ago. It was a Colt HBar Match. I had been to a gun show in Houston and 1 vendor had a "stack" of new ones in the box for $800. So I sold mine figuring I could get another if I wanted one. I couldn't drive tacks with mine, so I figured someday I'd look into a heavy barrel different brand.

I don't really have a convenient place to plink anymore. The gov't closed down our old playground south of Victoria Texas. Its called Coleto Creek and about 5years ago they closed it preventing any motorized vehicles. Really pissed me off. It was a major playground for ATV's and 4x4's. Now, only the law gets to ride their ATV's on it for enforcement.
