I know some expect government help and some don't. Some are happy with the help they get and some are not. But let's don't forget that politics is a prohibited topic on Tractorbynet.

Mr. Bird-----In a situation like this it is not about politics it is about greed (Votes) some "rural areas" of Beaumont will not see electric lights for up to six weeks where as the "city's" lights will be repaired by the end of the week---Just because you live in the country and feed this great nation does not make you any less needy of basic services!!!! Hang in there guys you are not missing anything except the failure of Banks and Insurance Companys not seen since the great Depreciatioin----Some one has to live here and produce gas so those that live in "other" parts of the country can drive around and avoid having to live in hurricane areas----ever heard of the Colonial Pipeline!!!!

Did Bailey make it in a pic? :D I wanted to use her as a wind sock. Actually is trained to stay behind the line in the utility room. She howled and cried all night. Of course we were up and down checking on all the crashes. But the worse thunder and lightening storm on Saturday, she broke her training and ended up in our room.

What a ride!

We are about 30 miles inland (south of Dayton) and caught the eastern edge of the eye. The wind started picking up out of the East about 7:00pm, lost power around 9:00pm. We watched out the windows on the northwest side (all the others were boarded) those pines were doing some wicked bending. Around 4:00am the wind died down (still blowing, but not near as bad) for about an hour, then it started hard out of the SSW and blew till maybe 9:00 or 10:00am before we could go outside.
I spent most of Saturday clearing the road and driveways, so folks could get around. Sunday & Monday went to damage assesment and repairs. Started some cleanup Tuesday.
The house is intact, but minus a few shingles. (noticed the shingles facing the southwest side were stripped of the embedded grit)
The fifthwheel was taken out by a oak tree, as well as the leanto storage area of the shop. (had to do some saw work to get the tractor out)
Lost quite a few trees, but all in all, feel very fortunate. Others didn't fair so well.
It's Wednesday evening and we're still on generator power, but there are line crews working in the area. I'm back at work, but will try to post some pics.

OK some generic Ike pictures...

First couple house pics and the last couple are my house. You can see the cleanup is mostly done and waiting for the county to pick up the debris.

Rob

Starting day 5 with no power.

Rob

Rob,

We're feeling for you, and hope it's only five days and not a day longer!!!

Thanks for the updated and pictures. You really captured it and having gone through the same thing, we can appreciate what you are dealing with.

Yeah, but how long was life expectancy then?:D
....

Ben Franklin live to a very old age. :D Course he was an exception.

Its a real shame about the Museum. At least the planes are kinda ok.

From the other link I surfed into a story about the Galvaston mayor. Criticism about her not calling a mandatory evacuation earlier and even on Friday saying Ike would not hit them. She is the mayor that had not heard the "certain death" warning. But some of the city council don't sound like they are much help either. And with the aftermath the deaths from cleanup and living. Saw that a women died after refueling a generator.

What a mess.

Good Luck down there,
Dan

seawall blvd in Galveston -- suppose to be about 50 yds of beach to the left of the seawall...........several years ago a tropical storm cut Galveston Beaches in half ... the city / county paid a dredge company to rebuild them ....they spent a lot of time & money on it. ...wonder how deep that water is that's pounding the seawall? and will they rebuild the beaches again?

Brazoria County - Surfside -- In June I rented the duplex that is just left of center (brown) of the picture - the one in front of the white one. At that time there were houses on both sides and between where this shot was taken from and it. In June you couldn't see those 2 houses from the camera's location ...... the houses that were blocking that view are gone ....just gone

Looking at those pictures of houses on stilts and all the others of the Bolivar Peninsula, I'm reminded of what causes an airplane wing to create lift. The air moving over the house would essentially be the same as air moving over the top of an airplane wing because of the roof pitch. That would create a huge low pressure area because the air moving over the house has to increase it's speed. That must have caused most of those houses to just lift up and fly off their pilings. No floor or walls were left. Incredible!

I agree. We've got one in Dallas in which we've eaten a couple of times. Kinda pricey, but very good.

Jim -- all that is water damage --- Picture sitting in your house at --oh -- 5 - 10 feet ASL .... and as you're looking out over the water (through the wind & rain) you see a hill .....and it's 22 feet tall ...and it's moving toward you ....and it's made of water. Notice there isn't much debris ..... Ike cleaned up his mess as he went through.

wow froggy those are some good pics ....they got a few details wrong ....but good pics. ie: highway bridge at surfside is 332 -- big deal .... 8 feet of flood waters? nope .. Bolivar (Gilchrist, Crystal Beach et al) had storm surge up to 12 feet above ground level. Heard the boss this a.m. saying they got confirmation of 17 feet one place. (didn't hear where) The boys are real busy now spreading out all over the counties trying to get "ground truth" of what occurred and determine what part of their forecasts were spot on and which were way off. Always trying to improve the product.

The best coverage on TV has been shown on TXCN for the past seven days. They have had around the clock coverage from KHOU in Houston through Tuesday.

Mike, I notice one or two beach houses standing that look like they have little damage among torn pilings of the neighbors. What was the difference in construction?
