When I engage my rear PTO on my 2310 with the brush cutter on it seems to "slam" in. It doesnt seem that there in any easier way to engage. Is this normal?

It's going to come on pretty fast. Just make sure the RPM's are as low as they can be. Brush cutters sound bad when they first start until the blades open out.

My MMM is the same way. The mid-PTO is either on or off, no progression. I have to bring the RPM's down low enough for it not to stall the engine but it is still a violent engagement no matter what I do.

Thanks for the replies, I was just wondering if I was doing something wrong. I have the RPM's down to very near idle then I bring the RPM's up after engagement.

When I am using my PTO (chipper or snowblower), I have the engine all the way at idle, then slowly increase it once the PTO has engaged. I haven't used the snowblower, yet (just got it a couple months ago), but when I first got the chipper, if I had the engine at anything higher than idle, it would instantly snap the shear pin.

Since slowing it down to idle, there have been no problems.

Good luck,
Jay

Ditto jaybrad & others-- think of engaging PTO being just like operating a boat-- ALL the way down to idle before engaging, then increase to working speed....

Hey Bever,

What brand of cutter did you end up buying? May I ask how much?

Happy mowing!

Our 1523 is the same way, just low enough so it won't stall, but still sounds kinda nasty when it engages.

I can engage the snowblower at idle speed since it doesn't load down the engine much but if I engage the MMM at idle speed the engine will often stall. I must engage it slightly above idle but when it engages the whole tractor shudders violently for just a couple of seconds then I bring the rpm up. The MMM finish/mulching must have a lot of stagnant weight that the engine is trying to start moving all of a sudden. Ive never tried to engage it at anything over about 1,100 rpms, I'm afraid the motor mounts might shear.

Thanks, DEWFPO! I don't yet have a MMM but am seriously thinking about one; Bever, my only experience with PTO engagement is with the snowblower-- now I have some new info for when & if (or "when"?) I get my MMM. I can certainly understand that there might be a whole lot more drag involved on a MMM, now that I think about it.

So -- listen to the voices of experience (not mine:eek:)- a brush cutter sounds like it, too would have a high initial drag, so a low idle might well be too low to prevent stalling.... but you'd still want to be as low as you can-- experiment & please let us know!

I had a 2310 with MMM for three years. Can't say I had the same problem with my 2310 and MMM. I always engaged it at idle, it would shudder for a second, but never stalled or even made me think it would stall on me. I guess I'm the only one who never had that problem. It seems too obvious but I'll ask anyway- You're not engaging the MMM while sitting in knee-high grass right?

That's correct. I always engage the mower on clear ground, then ease into the grass.

Of note : I live at 7,200 elevation so that may not help the situation either.

I do not know how fast the mid-PTO is spinning at an above idle engine speed but it may be 1,000(?) rpm. So trying to take the weight of all that rotating mass from 0 rpm to 1,000 pto rpm instantaneously puts one heck of a harsh load on the mechanicals.

I have to say, I was somewhat amazed that this tractor did not have a clutch for the PTO. My Kubota B7300 had one. When I went to engage the PTO to run my bush mower on the Massey the engine stalled. I was not sure if I was missing something so I called my dealer and he said to put the throttle just above idle, engage the PTO and throttle up at the same time. I tried it a few times and got pretty good at it to the point the tractor hardly shudders at all.

Still, it still seems a bit hard on the riggin to me and a clutch would ease the violence but I am sure it is a cost thing and the Iseki engineers must be OK with it so who am I to say
