Bringing a 640 Back To Life (was Newcomer)

Looks like I'll be pulling the gas tank to get all that goo out of the bottom
of it.

Can anyone remember offhand how many bolts are holding on the fenders
so I can get that thing out??

How many and where would be great!!

Fenders? You can pull the 2 biggun's that hold the brackets to each trumpet.. that's the easiest way.

Sorry, axle trumpets. The fenders are bolted or rivited to their brackets, adn then the bracket on each side is bolted to the axle trumpet with 2 large ( 5/8? ) bolts. Thes ebolts may also hold on under axle sway bar brackets.. etc.... and in some cases.. loader brackets.. if the tractor had a loader that used rear axle brackets..

I need to get the gas tank out to clean the inside and repair the
valve...

Uh??? you mentioned fenders.. those are in the rear... I've only see a few front mounted fenders on fords.. and most of those are english machines.

Are you refering to the HOOD and dogleg panels by chance? the HOOD is what is around the gas tank.

You are in luck.. ford only used about 350 small machine bolts to hold the various parts of the hood, nose piece, doglegs, dash, and cowl together. With a good set of stubby wrenches and stubby sockets, lots of pb oil, plenty of luck, and some trained mice.. you should have no problem disassembling an old rusty ford hood!

First.. get the grill out of the way.. now, get the hood center out of the way.. now undo the bolts that hold the hood torpedo side to the dash and lower dash cowl.. , will be a couple onthe side, a few onthe bottom, and one inthe top track where the hood center panel is... do that to both sides.. then there will be a dogleg lower fastener.. with that off, you should then be able to unbolt the nose piece from one of the hood sides.. againprobably be about 6-7 bolts to undo a single side.. all captive nuts too.. so if one starts turning.. it's a real booger of a job as you have to cut the captive shell off the nut to get at it. once that is done.. the hood torpedo and dogleg will come off as a unit on one side, and the other side will have a torpedo, and dogleg, and nose piece.. that only leaves the dash and cowl.. and youcan leave those on to get at the gas tank.

This is all still very fresh in my mind as i just had to assemble the sheet metal on my 951 back in april / may. Do yourself a favor.. when it goes back together.. rup a tap theru EVERY nut to clean am up

hood side panels ( torpedo's ) with attached dog legs.. front grill, hood center section, dash, and cowl piece plus nose medalion holder.

I wonder if there is a way to clean the inside bottom of the tank and replace
the tank valve without removing the tank??

It's tight, and you may need the trained mice.. but you might be able to replace the tank valve in place. Just depends on your heat shield / rocker cover, your tools and hand size.

I bet my wifes small hands will come in handy on this one...

Do you know of a good solvent that will free up that goo at the bottom of
the tank? It's 20 year old black evaporated gas gunk...

Wow, those 600's sound tough. I have had the tank out of my 8n several times and it was an easy job every time. I think there was just (6) bolts holding the hood on with (2) up front and (4) on the dash, and (4) screws holding the tank onto the hood.

I certainly prefer the 8n because of its better power/weight ratio, parts availability, and more durable hydraulics but I suspect I am in the minority. For PTO work however, I would give the edge to the 640 because of the live hydraulics.

I'd wager parts availability is just as good for the 600 as it is for the 8n.. sure.. you won't run down to tractor supply on sunday at 4:30 pm and grab a water pump, starter, and manifold of fthe shelf like you can for an 8n.. but a trip to cnh on momday morning will certaintly get it for you.

Sorry, guys... Just got a little side tracked. All I have left to do (no small chore ) is to pull the gas tank and really get all that evoporated gas goo
out. Then, change out the fuel valve. It sounded really good when I fired it up.

I was just about to, when my beater Fiero died while I was rebuilding the
suspension on my GT Mustang. Now I'm scrabling to get two cars up. While
the wife and I share the truck. I still have my 66 Mustang, but I can't bear to put that on the road daily...

Hope to get back to it soon. I will keep all updated...

Meanwhile the good ole 8N is keeping up with my hogging duties...

If there were only 36 hrs in a day!! ; )

I have had no difficulties getting any of the parts I need for the 640.

I'm sure I will have both working by the fall cutting time. Comparison notes
will be posted then.

Well... it's time to get back to the final phase of the tractor fix. The GT Mustang suspension kit is on and out of my garage.

Time to pull that gas tank.

Would it be better just to buy a new tank or should I just clean the old one
out. It has quite a bit of black goo in there... and the valve is shot.

Anyone have a line on a new tank??
