1720 Ford
Good Tractor
Model Year: 1987

This is a great compact tractor for a small farm or large lawn etc. I assembled this tractor when I worked at the dealership that sold it to the original owner. I came across it at another dealer that was selling it for the second owner. I got it with a Land Pride mower, box blade, disc, and dirt scoop.

Pros: Economical.
Cons: Paint quality.

1720 Ford
Ford 1720 with Bush Hog 2246 QT Loader
Model Year: 1989

This is a great tractor for what I need. I have 20 acres and use it to do trail/field clearing and clean out ditches on occasion. I've had it for about 6 years and the only maintenance I've done is add a new starter solenoid this year (2013). Otherwise I add a few gallons of diesel every year and its good to go. The front loader is really handy for carrying rocks or wood and for minor dirt movement.

Pros: Compact and easy to maneuver, plenty of power.
Cons: Not 4WD, sure would be nice.

Awesome Tractor
Model Year: 1990

I purchased my Ford 1720 20+ years ago. I use it around our little farm and have used in my commercial sawmill operation. It has out performed my expectations and others have been amazed with what a small tractor can do. I have cleared the land for our home and farm with it. I have bent and repaired nearly every body panel on it. I have never regretted this purchase. It is unfortunate it is no longer made. I purchased a Bradco hoe after a few years and can't part with this combination. If I choose to get another tractor, I will retain this piece of equipment.

Pros: Durability, performance, reliability.
Cons: Small.

Ford 1720
Model Year: 1988

Bought this used with low hours I use it to move wood pellets the rear lift is 2700lbs with the three point hitch forks. It's no problem to move a ton into my storage building, I usually order 6 ton. I also use the loader to bucket 12 bags at a time to the house and remove snow from around the property will be doing some landscaping with it next spring, all around good tractor smooth in 4wd, parts for Ford and Shibaura readily available they made this model quite a few years.

Pros: Strong rear lift, smooth 4WD, starts everytime no matter temp.
Cons: None yet.

1720 Ford
Ford 1720
Model Year: 1988

I purchased my 1720 SSS 12X12 in 1995 with less than 100 hours on it equipped turf tires, loader & RM 59-3 mower. The tractor currently has 2200 hours on it and still operates flawlessly with no leaks, it has never broken or failed to start even in sub zero weather. Steering and all linkages are tight as are the loader controls and pins. I have many uses for my 1720 including towing my Perkins powered Vermeer 1250 chipper which weighs 6200lbs around my property as I clear & thin out my forest. It easily handles the chipper even when maneuvering in the woods. The only problem I’ve had with my 1720 as received was with the turf tires causing the driveline to bind. The tires are grossly mismatched at the factory and will bind the driveline within 4ft going straight. I resolved that problem by calculating the proper diameter front tires and installing lower profile 14” radial snow tires on the front. These tires are much higher quality and cheaper than the OEM replacements. My other issue was the need for more power running my 60” snow blower in very deep snow. The first pass down the driveway especially the end (state highway) with the plowed & packed bank required me to use the clutch excessively to prevent stalling as I broke thru. It was okay after the first pass because I could take a smaller bite. My power issue was resolved by adding a turbo charger and increasing the fuel rate. Excellent tractor IMO and from what I’ve read is one of the best cut’s Ford has ever made, I agree! Wish list; creeper gear set and fully enclosed heated cab. Being a mechanic I see this machine as being very well built and from my experience is very tough and capable for its size & stock hp. I would recommend this machine in a heartbeat. Tim B Attachments; I have a Generac PTO 25kw/50kw surge generator RM-59-3 3pt finish mower with double set of blades installed 60” snow blower 60” rough cut mower. 2 landscape rakes 1 bottom plow Disk harrows Pallet forks (homemade) Towing bar with receiver (homemade) JD Post hole digger Carry all for 3pt hitch

Pros: Perfect size for my needs & reliable.
Cons: More power & cab.

I can't fault this tractor in any way. My tractor is 4X4 and there isn't any job that I haven't been able to do with it. It's the best little helper and has never failed us. I give it a AAA rating.

Pros: Hard to beat.
Cons: None.

1720 Ford
1720 SSS Turbo
Model Year: 1995

I bought my 1988 Ford 1720SSS in April of 1995 with a FEL with under 200 hours it currently has 2006 hours on clock. I have numerous attachments which include a 25kw Generac PTO generator with 100amp breaker panel & various outlets that mounts to 3pt hitch so I can bring power anywhere, a 60” snow blower, homemade pallet, forks, rototiller, 60" brush cutter, RM59 finish mower, 1 bottom plow, harrows, posthole digger Also a large extension for bucket to increase capacity which is easily mounted or removed, modified OEM headlights to accept H4 bulbs. I added 2 halogen work lights to loader arms along with 2 for rear of tractor, ag & turf tires, 3pt hitch attachment for skidding logs with receiver for various hitches. I have used my tractor for clearing 4 heavily wooded acres and snow-blowing 2 driveways and mowing. I have had zero mechanical issues. The only issues I have found is the need for the creeper gear set and/or more power when snow-blowing. The first full pass snow blowing down the driveway and at the end of the driveway which is rolled & packed from the plows requires excessive use of the clutch to allow the snow-blower to clear. The need for a cab. The power issue has been solved with the addition of a turbocharger from a Saab. My guess is that the HP has been increased 30~50%. It now throws wet snow like powder. The turbo design allowed a very easy and clean installation. Tractor has never been to a dealer. A larger alternator is needed now if all lights are on at once but aside from that this has been an excellent tractor, it has no oil or coolant leaks and starts at any temperature. I would definitely buy another!! Tim

Pros: Right size for my needs.
Cons: Wish it had a cab.

Eaguar Meadows Ford 1720 Experience
Model Year: 1989

We have a small piece of property in Western Washington State we call Eaguar Meadows. It could possibly be our dream home location, but it's still early to tell. Before we bought our 1720 we would use the family JD rider for attempting to clear and maintain the landscape. The 1720 has definitely been a valuable asset to add. While there are definitely more modern tractors with hydro-trans and all, the 1720 has been able to perform every task we've tried with it. We picked up several implements and the 1720 has handled each quite well. We use a 60 inch brushhog, 48 inch tiller, 48 inch boxblade, a 3pt hydraulic wood splitter, and several others. The only wish I have is that it would be nice if the loader could lift a pallet of cement bags instead of only about half of it. This would have been handy when I was putting up fence around the perimeter and cross-fencing for the horses. Oh well. Another implement I would like to try on it would be a backhoe. It would be easier than building a pretty major sized pond with the loader alone! Overall, I am very pleased with the Ford 1720 and believe it to be a good older small tractor for the small acerage owner. Especially for the price.

Pros: Usually enough power, small enough for tight places.
Cons: Hydrastatic Trans and a little more loader lifting capacity would be nice.

1720 Ford
Ford 1720 4x4 Compact Tractor
Model Year: 1994

I bought this tractor two years ago for $9500. It has been a wonderful asset to our property and has saved us countless hours of backbreaking work on our 30 acres. It is a 30hp diesel and came with a loader bucket and later I added a York Rake and a front mount snow blower. This tractor has cleared my 100yd driveway (we get between 12-14ft a year), put my driveway in, skidded logs, filled in and leveled my yard, York raked my yard, moved 600-800lb stones, dug and back-filled a drainage ditch and loaded trucks with fire wood. We have used this tractor for everything imaginable and it has worked flawlessly. The tractor is a beast in 4wd, the hydraulics are strong, the controls are well located and easily accessible, the loader bucket works effortlessly and has a float setting when the bucket is dropped. It is easy and affordable to maintain and seems relatively easy to work on. It has full instrumentation and glow plugs which is great during our long and cold winters. Overall this tractor has paid for itself in the two years I have owned it and I have not a bad thing to say about it. I only wish I had Ag tires instead of turfs, my set of chains make them far more aggressive, but Ags will be a future upgrade for skidding in my woods.

Pros: Everything about this tractor is great.
Cons: None.
