Hi Guys.

I just bought a Kubota ZD21. I asked what year it was and the guy said he wasn't sure, but he thought his dad bought it around 2007. The thing is in excellent shape. Just a couple scuffs on the deck - nothing major. It has 500 hours on it and I was told it was never used commercially, just around the dad's property.

At any rate, we settled on $6k for a price. I thought this was a good price and felt pretty good about it given the condition, the fact the guy delivered it from 3hrs away and took the time to do an orientation.

A bit ago I pulled the serial number off of it and found what I thought was a decoder. If I'm reading it right, the machine is actually a 2002! The serial number starts with 2U4.

Any thoughts? I don't think there was any malice - he likely didn't know the age. I guess the fact I wouldn't have suspected it was more than a few years old, let alone 10 is a good sign. Nonetheless, I have to wonder if $6k was far too much. :(

Anything I should look for? He said maintenance is all up to date, but being **** retentive, I plan on going through it - change the hydraulic fluid, oil, fuel/oil/hydraulic/air filters, grease the unit, replace the blades, etc.

I know the early units had transmission issues - I'm unsure if this had the update. I assume if there was a problem it would have shown by now?

Thanks for your help, as always!

You'll get better/more answers here Kubota Lawn & Garden maybe. I wouldn't be to concerned about the age. If the machine has been maintained the hours are the hours and that's what counts plus condition. If you don't get an answer here or at the other forum you can always contact a Kubota dealer and they should be able to tell you year and any recalls or issues.

I don't think it is that old. I think they started putting that deck on in about 2005. Before that, it was a stamped deck. I could be wrong. Either way, I wouldn't worry about the age. It looks like a nicely cared for machine, in good shape, with little use. Use it....
