Give the engine ample break in time, about 10-15 hours. Also, and I keep forgetting to mention this, make sure the engine is not overfilled with oil which sometimes people tend to do which causes the excess oil to be forced into the air intake through the breather to be sucked in and smoke at startup. If after break in it still smokes a lot at startup, then address it as an issue with the dealer. Some VERY light startup smoke can be considered normal, but a lot of oil smoke at startup is a problem. Kohler makes great engines, and have been known at least in the past to stand behind their products in a fair manner. A lot of people say, "Just live with it," as far as initial problems, but if they don't go away after break-in, they are not going to get any better later. Heavy startup smoke, valvetrain noise, leaks, etc-- unacceptable, period.
