After some research I discovered that the unit has a built in battery source but takes its signal from the impulse of one of the spark plug wires. When I zip-tied the lead wire to the spark plug wire it started to function again, and has worked perfectly since.

Mine froze, but it froze with HH8.7, not the number of hours (around 150). So, I don't think mine just lost it's signal. But, I will try to check the wires leading to it again.

I purchased a used Z-Force 48 a couple of months ago and its hour meter was frozen at 205.1 hours.(Note: the meter on my machine has only the hour function.) After some research I discovered that the unit has a built in battery source but takes its signal from the impulse of one of the spark plug wires. When I zip-tied the lead wire to the spark plug wire it started to function again, and has worked perfectly since.

Interesting! That almost sounds like an aftermarket hour meter. The one on mine starts timing with just the ignition on.

I believe this is standard: when the iginition is on it is counting.

I changed the oil and filter in the Z-Force over the weekend. Checked the wires going to the hour meter again. Everything appeared fine.... other than the meter froze on something goofy and no longer working.

Unless someone has an affordable option, I guess I will just guesstimate my hours each year and not replace the hour meter. $50 to $60 bucks just seems crazy for an hour meter.

Thanks, for input.

The Z-Force mowers with Briggs engines used a signal wire from the ignition. On all the other models(Kohler, Kawasaki engines) the hour meter runs anytime the key is on.
