Here is a pix of a prototype being worked on by JD. Notice there is no seat. That's because there is no driver. I found this on the JD international site. The following was copied from the site.

A prototype futuristic tractor, like the one shown at right, uses computers and signals from satellites to drive programmed routes without a human driver aboard. The vehicle receives signals from global positioning system satellites via two 6-inch domes on top. Two antennas on the rear receive signals from a computer on the ground that holds the master plan for the machine's assignment and allows a human to monitor the work remotely. The antennas can also be used if the operator wants to use a joystick to steer the vehicle in or out of its storage shed because the satellite signals won't penetrate buildings or heavy foliage. Out in the open, the tractor will follow programmed routes and electronic maps of the work area, using information from satellites to determine its location and driving at speeds preset by the computer. Deere engineers are convinced the day of the driverless tractor will come for some agricultural jobs such as orchard spraying and, perhaps, fall tillage. This autonomous machine is still in development and not available for sale.

This post has me grinning and thinking of our financial adviser. Mark is a young guy, with a bright future ahead of him.

And although Mark cuts his grass regularly he does it by sipping a ice-tea in his lawn chair. You see Mark has 2 robotic mowers. They are powered by a battery about the size of a car battery and criss cross his yard until the job is done. If Mark sees a spot in question all he has to do is pick up his remote to direct one of the robots otherwise no intervention is needed. There is a buried perimeter wire that sends a signal to each "bot" so that it knows to turn around and make a different pass.

I kinda enjoy sitting on the New Holland to mow myself....

This is stuff has been out in fields for years. Deere, New Holland and serveral other companies like Outback Guidance make self steering, GPS guided systems for tractors. You plot your routes, or drive it once and have the system save it, and the machine can repeat the movments unassisted. We've sold a handful of these systems locally. It looks like all Deere has done is remove the seat, other than that its just existing technology.

This reminds me of the pilotless airliner. It starts off the safety announcements by telling the passengers that the plane is completely automatic and controlled by computer. So sit back and enjoy the flight, nothing can go wrong, nothing can go wrong, nothing go can wrong, nothing can go go go wrong wrong wrong, go can wrong, wrong wrong go go go go go, wrong wrong wrong....

I thought this was going to be the old joke that went around during the 70's. It seems John Deere was coming out with a new model that didn't have a seat and also no steering wheel.

It was for the farmer who lost his butt the year before and just didn't know which way to turn.
