I see good prices on Mobil 1 all the time and was wondering how it stacked up to other brands of synthetic oils... it is a POA oil??

Mobil 1 is PAO.

It's what I use in all my air-cooled 4 stroke engines now.

Junkman,
You can probably guess my opinion of Mobil1 by now based on my other posts. I consider it to be one of the better synthetic oils. I ran Syntec in my wife's Pathfinder for quite some time. I'm running the Rotella 5W40 in my L3710DT (mainly because it was only a little over half of the price of Mobil Delvac 1) and I run Castrol GTX in my old Toyota. The Pathfinder, new Toyota and assorted air-cooled four strokes now all get Mobil 1. I'll probably switch the tractor over to Mobil Delvac 1 unless Wal-Mart comes through with more Rotella Synthetic at a cheap price like the reports from up north are showing. Amsoil claims to be better and they actually have test results to back up their claims which is more than most other oil marketers. Whether or not these tests are relevant has been debated before and I have no opinion. Regardless, I don't see it on store shelves in my area and I consider multi-level marketing to be right up there with spam and telemarketing. I refuse to patronize any of them if it is at all possible.

I run Mobol1 synthetic 5-30 in all my cars. I use Rotella's synthetic 5-40 in the Kubota. I think both are great and worth the extra expense. I no longer change my oil every 3000 miles or 50 hours on the clock. I'm at 5000 miles and 100 hours running synthetic. That's 3 times a year for each car and once every 10 months for the Kubota.

In my truck, I'm at 7500 on dino oil, and that's the severe duty recommendation. Daughter's Acura goes 10k on dino oil changes per the book.

I ran Mobil 1 in my stuff for a while, but never found it gave any benefit, as I was changing oil at the same intervals as dino. In one application, it may have caused problems.

Honda motorcycles are known, if anything, for NOT leaking oil. Shortly after I switched to Mobil 1 15w-50 in it, BIG oil leaks appeared.

I'm surprised to hear that Mobil 1 leaked in your Honda...working in a small town american iron bike shop, we have converted just about every bike we have serviced in the last 2 years to Mobil 1 in the crankcase, tranny and primary (only have to carry one oil with you on the road, instead of 3) /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif and haven't had a (synthetic oil symptom) leak reported yet...and Harley's are known for leaking /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

We have noticed smoother shifting, less primary noise and a drop of about 20-30 degrees on the twin cam engines which run much hotter than the evolution engines /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Junkman,
I had an old friend that was a retired engineer with General Motors. He told about tests they ran on Mobil 1, Suburban ran 400,000 miles, changed oil and filter at 7500 miles, upon tearing down the engine, no appreciable wear. Ran another
test on same type of engine, ran 100,000 miles, changed filter at 7,500 miles and then ran to 10,000 miles and changed oil. He claimed that you couldn't hardly tell the engine had been run. He used Mobil 1 in all of his vehicles and never had any engine problems. In 1997 I bought a Chev one ton van with the 5.7 Vortec engine, first oil change I started Mobil 1. I change every 5,000 to 6,000 miles, change filter at same time. I now have 185,000 miles on the van, the engine doesn't use any oil between changes and doesn't leak a drop. Not a bolt on the engine has been touched. Replaced alternator, power steering pump, battery, drums, rotars, tires and miscellaneous items that do wear out. I almost forgot, I ordered Positrac on the van,(Engineer said that was a mistake, poor performance), I pulled a travel trailer for about 20,000 miles when I first got the van. When I would come off the Interstate and start to make a turn to another street, the internal clutches would grab and make noise. He suggested that I go to Mobil 1 Gear Oil and that would solve the problem. He was right on. Hasn't grabbed since. I asked him why the factories didn't put it all cars. He said, "how would we be able to sell as many cars if they didn't wear out".
Food for thought. I believe Mobil 1 is put in Corvettes and all Mercedes at the factory???? In case you haven't figured out yet, I'm sure sold on Mobil 1. When new tractor needs oil change, You guessed it, Mobil 1.
Any way, thats my two pesos worth.

Exxon did similar long term tests and engine teardowns. Mobil 1 was the best. So, they proceeded to emulate it and eventually merged with the company that makes the stuff. So, I don't feel like being a traitor in using it now in my air-cooled engines. (Similar teardowns on dino oils at shorter change times shows good engine results, too.) Don't think it's of much advantage on bigger, cooler-running engines. The larger crankcases make it much more expensive.

Larry,
If and when I decide to switch to Delvac 1, I will probably have to order it from somewhere like AVLube's Mobil Delvac 1 page . There are no Mobil distributors near my area to ask them to order the product for me and mail order seems to be the best solution.
