We've lived off grid for 15+ years. We enjoy most modern luxuries: satellite TV an internet, phone via Starlink, hot water on demand (the well water is free and yummy from a well powered by a AC/DC pump), power hog tools in the shop and on and on. We don't do resistance loads if at all possible. We have the kitchen fridge/freezer, two chest deep freezers, the outside large fridge, the water well, all the electronics we never shut down, and on and on. Then the weather station and the solar monitoring system.

We heat with wood from one stove in the winter. We have no AC but we open the windows at night and close them in the morning. A few times per year it has gotten to upper 80's in the house but if you think its hot go out in the shade for a few minutes then come back inside and you think you walked into a cooler.

This is how we live. Year after year after year...

But it's not all glory. This year the ground squirrels moved in.... Not chipmunks, gray diggers. The dogs have killed a bunch but they are destroying the garden. No boring day here.
Nice setup (y). I was a regular reader of HomePower back when.... always enjoyed seeing the build details, and appreciated the editorial discipline around how that was presented.

Our now-old 120vac Frigidaire fridge/freezer (analog controls only) is still chugging along, knock wood. You'd likely know of them, but (re-)posting the link for others. Sunfrost came from ultra-reliable roots (vaccine fridges for MiddleNowhere), and I'm hoping that legacy persists if/when I get around to buying one. Ridiculous amounts of insulation, and for off-grid, DC options.... Onshore built as well.

Eastern Ontario had a major wide-area ice-storm in '98. I remember being in that area the next summer, talking with an old-timer who lived totally off-grid. Young lads (Forces Reserve) knocked on his door to check on him one night; the looks on their faces (after being in total devastation for days) was priceless when they stepped into his place - zero difference to him, from before the storm. He'd heard it was coming, and even had time to take the truck to town - stocked up on VHS movies, and had one playing.....

Limitations to off-grid systems - usually, and you have to Own Your Own Problems.... but when the Brown-Stuff hits the Fan....

No where near you, but I'm seeing gray squirrels here this year, and don't recall any before..... did they arrive on ships recently, or were air-dropped ?

Max, sent a PM.

If more people got together for stuff life would be better.
+2.

Us elders are def not immune, but, I'm glad I grew up Back When.... I'd say the "social" aspect of being young today has to be pretty weird.

University student (I'm terrible with names, including what her App is) came up with an App She Doesn't Want You to Use........ Its only focus is to schedule Real World group events (ex. Walk, Run, Hike, but could be Anything) Where The Phones Are Not Allowed.

It got traction, pretty much immediately.

I wanted to see what my eu2200i oil temps were. 600w load, Eco Off,
run time 30 minutes. Oil Temp, and Valve Cover Temp. In this heat I
was expecting a higher oil temp.

That is impressive.

Managing Thermals, air-cooled, @ High Ambient...... def not trivial.

They're probably mine. I've been using catch & release here, to keep the population down. 😁
