Your last generator Maintenance Run

gen left Reno NV on Oct 22, and got here 4pm today. At least it came on a pallet so therefore arrived in an undamaged box.
This weekend will have some help unboxing it and installing wheel kit, no way I can horse around 200+ pounds. Also getting help with new bandsaw and drill press, both
way too heavy for me to lift. (appt with back surgeon next week.......)
Propane tanks and gas cans full and ready to go.

Need to get some 10/30 full synthetic oil for it, sure it shipped with basic oil. I'll run it about ten hours and then change the oil and filter.
Called electrician and told him time to go, hope he comes out this week or next.

I'll bet it shipped with NO oil of any kind! Feels good to have energy security doesn't it?

These daze..... getting most anything shipped promptly is a small lottery-win..... double bonus on something that substantial.

Let us know once sparky has you set up !

Finally found a suitable donor for my genset doghouse. It'll be well vented, and exhaust fan installed to draw fresh air through, and the sides will hinge out to allow more airflow. Also considering building a stand for it to get it up a few feet off the ground which will also make it easier to work on.

Looks like it will do a good job of keeping the elements, debris etc off of it

Good lord does it ever. We have a 6500 watt portable gasoline generator. House wired with an interlock etc. Yes the portable can be a pain in the butt to set up, but *knock on wood* it keeps murphy at bay. The prior homeowner said power went out a lot. So we installed the generator panel etc. In 5 years we have lost power long enough to warrant firing up the generator twice. Other outages lasted a few minutes or less than an hour. Two lasted over 12 hours each.

read that new vaccine needs to be kept at 20 below, challenging for many drug stores and sure a reason to have an automatic back up gen.
I don't think gen manufacturers will be slowing down any time soon.

helper coming over later today to help me put wheels on my gen and then it's ready for its first startup. Going to do that on propane first, actually don't want it to start too quickly to allow engine
to turn over a few times and get oil pumping. If I can find where to manually ****** the throttle might do that for a few seconds too. Cold machinery that goes right to 3600rpm always make me worry. Though in this case gen will be warm being in garage for hours with heat on. Gen came with one quart of private label oil, no mention of manufacturer (like Warren Distributing, etc) and one quart didn't even show up on the bottom of the dipstick. Going to check it again before starting, may have to add more oil. Strange they would send unit without enough oil to make it midway
up the dipstick. Maybe they wanted to make sure folks wouldn't overfill it. Really wish it had a "real" oil dipstick instead of one with a whole lot of threads to screw in.

Getting close

You've likely been over this already......... manual should be clear about whether or not the dipstick is screwed all the way down to measure level.

I like how that style seals well (assuming Oring), but don't like that the measurement position is open to interpretation..... easy to overfill.

At least it isn't a modern Porsche..... no dipstick at all........ cost cutting @ $150k

I'm sure hoping so. It'll be a bit tight of a fit, but plenty of venting should allow adequate airflow. Going to move the generator and the doghouse into the basement very soon to see about getting it all squared away. Ideally, I'd like to run a conduit directly to it and leave it wired into the transfer switch. I'm doubly protected, transfer switch that breaks the connection as well as an interlock switch on the panel. If I run conduit for the wire, I'm going to run two. One to send power to my switch/house, the other to wire in a remote keyswitch and a power door lock actuator to pull the choke. That should make it so I don't have to go outside in the storm in order to get power back in the house.
