I've been able to get a couple of 4D batteries that are 1 year old... just thinking I could use a them with an invertor and the little Honda 1000 hooked to charger which shold give more than the 8.3 amp Honda charging circuit...

4D looks to be about 1000 CCA (up here :cold:, I only look at cold crank ratings....), those would be nice for your household - not like you are trying to run 5 tons of AC.......

Your inverter should have a low voltage alarm. Still, I like to wire in a low cost analog panel-voltmeter (bulb disconnected) onto batteries in that type of application - battery life will be better if you aren't running down to LVD on the inverter.

I'd give it a go with your new 1kw; with a couple of 4Ds, it may even keep up with 1 fridge + internet electronics. Let us know if you go this route..... sounds like this PGE problem won't be going away soon.....

Yep... PGE keeps running ads telling customers with needs to prepare... have a plan.

Back in 1990 to follow utility requirements I had to "Register" my Honda 1000. PGE sent out a mailer with a requirement to register all generators kept or used at the premise... they really didn't want generators and some I know opted not to buy back then.

30 years later PGE has done a 180 on the policy.

The 59 hours my area was without power should be a teaching event the way I look at it... for those spared the devastation of fire/evacuation it was an inconvenience that forced people to think... just what do I really need and how to make it happen... for most it was refrigeration if you were not on a well which few are. It was also an opportunity for neighbors to be neighborly.

Back in 89 when the big quake came we were out for many days... a lot of people have no recollection... too young, didn't live here, etc...

I say it is luxury living whey you still have the roof over your head and hot and cold running water!!!

I had free batteries on a regular basis to run my 3000 telecom 110/220 inverter. Bought a cheap 48 volt scooter charger from China just to keep them topped up. But it's a pain, and they die a slow death before you ever get to use them in ernest. Maybe different in your situation. Now I have the 48 Volt Gator with batteries that get used regularly. Not in the winter though. Question is, would they be discharged, the minute I need them? Probably by murphies law.

Yep... this is why I never moved forward.

Tapping into the EV batteries will continue to evolve especially if the grid repeatedly shuts down.

One of the old PGE managers said with the start of Grid Tied Solar that it has begun... we are circling the drain to being irrelevant...

yup, I've felt like that for awhile...;)

It seems like your state forces you out on a limb and then proceeds to cut it off. Probably requires a permit to cut off the limb though.

Glass half full, or....... You've got about 2 million more people than Canada does, crammed into one State..... not small, in terms of energy needs.

If you want to accelerate that trip down the drain, then, continue to de-stabilize the grid - the weakness of pure Grid-Tied is that you are still dependent on the grid being Up.

Even people with no previous concerns or interest will start looking at alternatives, and the people with the financial muscle will likely step up and upgrade accordingly.

When the grid was stable and affordable, it was only hobbyists and dedicated off-grid people who paid attention to Alt NRG.....

I thought things would impriove when Maurice Strong took over Hydro. That didn't last long.

I was appalled when they levelled Lakeview Coal Fired Generating Plant. I saw a recent documentary and see they also levelled Nanticoke and gave the land to the Indians I believe. Seems like high treason if you ask me. And then you see these STUPID windmills standing still on the coldest days of the year!
