I just installed a Genmon wifi monitor to my generac whole house system. I had a client ask me about it, so i thought id check it out. The new generac system include a wifi system, but my 3 year old unit does not. It was vary easy to install as i ordered the preloaded Raspberry Pi version with external antenna. Its pretty much plug and play. The feature i really like is the ability now to do scheduled exercise modes that include actually transferring power. I tried it and even the electric clocks dont need resetting. Has a great interface page and i see rpm, power output, frequency, fuel use, utility voltage, battery voltage, tons of other stuff. It even email me when theres any change in status. It auto updates clock, including daylight savings time, and i can change exercise times and durations to whatever i want, not the set ones in generator.

Still exploring it, i only wish i could remote start and stop it IF THE POWER ACTUALLY IS OUT. But thats a feature no one can fix. Since you have to have utility power present to move transfer switch to utility side, and allow for generator to cool down after load is removed, this is one hard nut to crack.

I can remotely start, transfer and stop generator as long as utility is present. Not sure why i would want to except for routine testing or exercising unit.

from my understanding (could be wrong) the transfer solenoids are 12v, there is a guy on steel soldiers that modified one for a mep unit. if thats the case, a 12v (even the start battery) with a little wiring can be used to push the solenoids.

Working on my latest generator yesterday. Base for my Cummins/Onan Quiet Diesel. DSC00008.JPG

I have a 200 amp asco switch but want control, so a contactor (with adjustable) overload is being installed and will be controlled with what turned out to be a very high performance VISONIC wireless four channel control. Two for Stop/Start and Two for Contactor On/Off. Alows me to start the generator remotely and decide how much time before putting under load. Plus, if the power comes back on, a transmitter in the ASCO switch will shut down the generator as well. It will be SLICK!

DSC04795b.jpg Generator that will sit atop the frame. Supposed to just be a silly little project that I could slip in between others.

FUEL tank is another story altogether.

Generator usually meant for commercial mobile service.Onan Swat.jpg

They run on 240 volts. Once they trip, they flip a switch that kills the load to coils. Ive had to replace a few coils that fried because some bugs got in the way and the coils kept getting 240 volts. Also, the gen has to run unloaded to cool down.

must be a different generac transfer switch, i will need to see if i can find the post, thanks for the info, mechanical latch solenoid nice.

Custom builds..... good stuff.

IT - does that Asco shut down the gen right away, or can you program a cool-down time ?

That picture is much like I was guessing it came out of.

Another one of those projects that if I knew what was involved, I would have passed. Park the thing in the corner and if I need it, take the hour to get it going, would have been easier. Plus, the thing is not worth a dollar more than the basic generator unit.

I think the ASCO does have a cool down timer. It has a bunch of timers but I have never used it in an automatic, engine start mode. I don't need or want the thing running in my absense. This newest set is supposed to be my night time or low (summer) load system, and it will be nice if the ASCO shuts it down on Utility restoral if I am sleeping.

You'll enjoy it when done IT..... I've found most personal projects, done well, usually take longer than I think, esp. on things I don't do for a living every day....

There is something about getting equipment set up exactly the way I want, that goes beyond "will I get these $ back later ?". I won't re-mortgage the house to do it, but otherwise don't lose any sleep..... despite not having found that lottery ticket yet :).

...... that said, on the balance-sheet side, you will be saving fuel

Our Gensets have a cool down feature that is variable from zero to 1 hour... I use 15 minutes which is about a 1/4 of the dial so assuming full dial is 1 hour.

There is also a line monitoring and delay... just because line power is back... the genset keep running about 10 minutes supplying load to minimize transfer is line power is back only momentarily...

It's all 1995 equipment 200 amp 3 phase switch rated for 600 volts...

The only issue except for replacing some block water heaters has been a delay on transfer module needed to be added... if the unit transfers back to line power too soon the main for the building trips... lots of motors up to 20 hp 3 phase 460 volt running 24/7
