Did someone have to stand guard at generator with 12g
Many were stolen but mine was behind a locked gate and chained with heavy chain…

It is always a concern.

People always run around like headless chicken when power fails. But after its back up, the become complacent and dont follow thru getting prepared fir next one.

I may have said this before. When i was installing backup generators i had a small HOA contact me to install a small 3phase air cooled to the community well. I gave them the bid than they wouldnt return my calls or email inquiry. No loss to me, iwas always busy. Than came the November windstorm that knocked down about 3500 power poles. People were out of power for weeks. Linemen from all over and also from Canada hit the area.

That HOA called me and said i could install their generator immediately as there were 6 or 8 families without water. I wasnt going to, but i ended up calling them and telling the guy even IF i had a 3 phase generator in stock, which i did not, i could possibly have it up and running today. They didnt even have a propane tank to run it. He became a jerk and demanded i find a way to power the well so they would have water. I hung up and never talked to them again. Ill bet they still dont have a generator.

People in California steal anything. After the 94 northridge earthquake, i came down to work for my old employer for 9 months ( money was tooooo good). I was working on shearing the walls on a vacant apartment complex we were renovating. Had a large air compressor running many nail guns. Suddenly guns stopped working. Walked over to where the air compressor USED to be…….just air hoses. Some ahole stole it while it was running.

I have never had a tool stollen in Idaho in over 30 years. Heck, in Montana during really windy cold nights, people leave their cars running while going to store so engines wouldnt freeze up (-40°). No one would steal the car.

Honest to gosh the PGE utility crews here have off duty uniformed police officers standing by… not directing traffic and only there to prevent robbery.

Crews were getting robbed at gunpoint so they started refusing to go certain places and union backed them.

Same for Bay Area news crews…

The off duty police officers are paid about $100 per hour by the networks and utilities to be armed at the job sites such as power pole or transformer replacement.

Dont know how old the deck gfci is, but some real old ones still work after electronics inside fail. I have ran into alot of them that wont trip with my gfci tripper tool, but still provide power.

Newer ones fail open.
Good point.

I've had that one trip in the past, but that is likely a lot longer ago than I think it is.

The family did not speak English and from Vietnam… I imagine cooking in the home country may be in well ventilated semi open kitchens?
Likely the case. Still plenty of lung-damage (over decades) from using charcoal semi-enclosed like that.

Just not immediately fatal, so may be considered "normal" in other climates/geographies.

We hear of that type of stunt too often, even gas grills being used inside during power outages.
Sadly, yes too, north of the 49th.

Big ice-storm, 98. Fire-crews hauling everybody out of a house near Ottawa. Dad had brought a big gas grill inside, fired it up full blast, then everybody went to bed.

NOT new-Canadians either ^. Fast-crews, and BS luck, they all survived.

How can people who were "educated" in a first-world country, know so little ?

As much as I hate to admit it..... California leads the continent, on way too many things.

Many Kanadian cities, are catching up though....
