I'm getting tired of having to hook up my PTO generator every time we have an outage. I heat with fuel oil, so I'm thinking of getting a diesel 10 - 12KW model. Instead of an outside enclosure, I want to locate it in the back of the barn with a thru wall exhaust.

Any suggestions?
Somebody on here (my lousy memory again), in your NE (Maine?), did a really nice build of a post-card worthy gen "shed" (excellent Winter shot posted, once done). I did hear "in-barn", but mentioning that ^, for the clean thru-wall installation (IIRC) - might be worth finding out exactly what was used on that one.....

I've never dealt with these folks, but they have been around for a while..... in that size of dzl, they run Perkins and Yanmar - should be solid units I'd suspect.

I'd be mildly concerned about exhaust leaks & an increased chance of fire. Definitely doable safely, but you just have to pay a bit more attention to proper ventilation for fumes & heat. Personally I'd stick it under a lean to or something rather than in my barn.

Kubota makes a nice 12kw diesel unit, not cheap around $11k

take a look here lots of models.

Thanks for the link. Best price so far on the Kubota.

I like the GL1100 Lowboy due to it's 27" height. I want to put it on the back wall of the barn under a window, using a thru wall exhaust. It also has a remote start kit, which I can place in the house.

***Update***

Absolute Generators in Iowa beat the Central Maine Diesel price on units I'm looking at by over $1K.

No good place to mount it outside. The barn is well ventilated and not usually inhabited. I'll put a CO detector nearby anyway. The 1" exhaust pipe on the Kubota need only be extended 12" to go thru the wall.

I wouldn't consider doing this with a gas powered unit due to possible fume buildup. Especially true with spillage during refueling and storing gas nearby.

Simply routing exhaust outside does not make for a safe install. To meet code on internal installs, there is also a need to bring in outside combustion air to the unit. There are also special firewall issues and fire safety devices necessary.

Some engines can be harmed by simply extending exhaust as it changes the pressures within the engine. The engine is designed for a certain exhaust system dynamics.
