In my mind that's dangerous and I try and make people understand that. Breakers and their ratings. First of all, they don't make breakers in all current ratings. So you have to go to the next size up. Then you need to accomodate brief motor starting loads.

So, what I am trying to sy is that your generator (Big or Small) may have breakers that if run at their maximum allowable current, for a length of time may fry your generator. It's why I run Motor Overloads on my generators that you can dial in precisely for trip current AND have the ability to allow brief starting currents.
not sure what your referring to with this post...

That one can sucessfully operate loads on a given generator that may destroy it. Have heard of it happenig quite often. The breakers are for catastrophic over current, not a method of determining that a given load is OK for continuous duty.

How many people have a current clamp or know how much load is on their generator? Most just think, the breakers hold, so everything must be OK.

that is so true, but i have also seen breakers fail for no known reason....especially gfci breakers. i have seen quite a few simple 15 and 20 amp breakers, running some lights and small rooms, test out at low amperage but fail.

whenever i encounter a generator that is tripping breakers i always do a test run and use a clamp on meter to test system. I often find that they have added something like a hot tub or replaced ac with a heat pump...things like that. but i have also found units running far below their rated output that trip the breaker.

I understand the protection GFI provides..... been meaning to grab some of the plug in adapters for my portables that I think ur posted.

But, I'd prefer them as an add-on like that for my use. I understand gfi receptacles are built to a certain price-point, so they do seem a bit failure prone. The LAST thing I want to have to mess with is pulling out a built-in gfi receptacle from a generator during emergency operation.

Borrowed some power (with permission) from next door last outage (my generators were good to go, just didn't feel like messing about outdoors that day). My neigbour is fed off a different feed than I, so we sling cords accross the lawns accordingly. I'd looked at my neighbour's panel last Spring, as she had a power outage in the attached garage. I couldn't find anything wrong, so advised to call an electrician. Problem turned out to be a faulty gfi outlet on their deck, which was the same circuit as the garage.

Fast forward to the recent outage..... couldn't plug into the New gfi outlet sparky installed on neigbour's deck. At first I thought there was some shutter type layer over the U ground vertical pins, but no, it seems it was installed with something like a thick layer of nylon sheeting behind the bezel. GFI is for safety, and I guess this delivers, as you can't plug anything into that receptacle.

Told my elderly neighbour I'd pop that gfi cover off the next time it's a dry day and I'm home, and see what's going on. Maybe I just had a brain-cramp looking at that the other night, but it seems like there is a layer under there that should have been removed at installation.

Complexity vs. Reliability vs. Safety.......

Yup, i truly hate gfcis. I installed a $53 siemens GFCI on a lake pump for a customer. New pump and wiring. Lasted 1 week. Kept tripping....even if all wires were disconnected. Had to replace breaker.

Did i say i hats gfci’s

As a property manager GFCI have burned up a lot of trouble shooting hours... sometimes bad GFCI and sometimes defective device.

I need some help finding repair information for a Briggs&Stratton model
319775 0109 E1
Code. 150915ZD
This is a vertical shaft 7 or 8kw standby generator that started burning massive amounts of oil after a 3 day run.
My tear down revealed the rings lost tension.
I have parts on hand but cannot find assembly torque values or clearances.

Thanks 90cummins

OK... so it's not just my tech-Spidey Sense then........ I haven't been stuck dealing with many, but from a past-life, I know how cost-constricted these high-volume products are - big conflict with operating electronics outdoors 24x7xforever......

Knock wood, haven't been into my B&S other than 1 carb...... so haven't had to chase this data myself.

Sitting here trying to remember...... we've had brief postings about a few rebuilds here, but can't recall B&S in particular.

With millions out there, somebody should know though....
