Reminds me of my neighbors F350 Diesel last week, as he is fixing to drive from Ontario to BC. All the sensors in the exhaust didn't agree and the truck went into limp mode. That would be a long trip going walking speed on the Trans Can.

Given a choice between brushes and brushless, I think it would boil down to how easily I can replace the brushes. If I had to tear into the machine, then no, not interested in brushes either.

I was slo thinking if the waveform isn't better with brushes. The Field is getting pure DC, not a rectified magnetically induced AC signal. Just a thought.

Brush or brushless has no impact on waveform as the magnetic field strength on the rotor can’t change fast enough the affect waveform. (1 cycle is 16 ms). You do get better performance at full field with brushless unless the brushes are in perfect condition. This is important in industrial settings where the genset may have to produce very high current for motor starting or clearing short circuits. Usually they would be expected to deliver up to 300% of rated current to trip breakers for example.

Sparking brushes however can wreak havoc on analog or digital controls... Especially digital controls.

Friend just Texted me. Joke Stroke stuck in WAWA for Four days for Exhaust System Issues! NICE!

Possibly, just possibly the generator tripped the ARC Fault Breakers in the Barn. They were both inexplicibly tripped after running on generator. I will have to keep an eye on that.

I have a 7kw portable gas generator. It runs everything I need in the house. Of course you need to be smart about it. Don稚 run the water pump, microwave, both boiler pumps and a coffee maker all at the same time.

When the grid is down I still want my creature comforts but am willing to load manage.

But what is the amperage that the Ford 150 is rated for?

A generator set-up is only as good as its weakest link, often times a plug, or wiring to the home.

I had a 20 KW, 83 amp generator hooked to my house, but it ran through a plug that was only rated for 50 amps, so I only had a 50 amp generator. It is now set up to get a full 20 KW/83 amps, but it is through some serious wiring to enable that.

Whether it痴 brushes, points or many other modern updates, the changes are ultimately driven by cost.

One thing that has actually detracted from reliability that is starting to be addressed is the overwhelming level of monitoring and protection that was made possible with digital controls. As every aspect of unit or vehicle operation has moved to computer controls the trend has been to add fault algorithms to everything. Many digital controlled brush machines for example won稚 allow the unit to run with the field resistance out of spec or start when battery voltage or cranking speed too low.

The lawyers unfortunately have final say on much of this so don稚 hold your breath if allowing it to start would increase liability.

As for battery diagnostics, most industrial ECMs have had this for as much as 20 years with the increasing detail. Newer vehicles have the alternator output controlled by one of the ECMs and have some level of battery condition monitoring. My 15 escape has a battery lifetime (not level of charge) remaining parameter that estimates the overall condition though I don稚 know how it is determined.

I don't drive anything that new..... good to see some useful diagnostics migrating on-board.

Cost. Truck Roll rules much. Manufacturer's hate paying for it (Warranty)..... getting a qualified tech on-site costs big money. From the other way around..... it's what drives seeing many (much) less than 10 year old household appliances at the end of the driveway..... consumers would mostly rather sign up for what looks like a low-payment loan for a new one, than pay the minimum for Truck Roll, plus whatever major parts follow..... Green Marketing, at it's best......

Lawyers, Accountants..... often make more product design decisions, than Engineers do. Esp. as manufacturing scales up.....

I quite likely have used this example on here before, but it ties very well with your "Liablity+Lawyers = AutoShutdown". Buddy of mine asks a customer who had been coming to his general light-duty shop for many years how they liked their new Subaru. The guy smiled then told the following story...... he drove another vehicle that first day they had it, his wife decides to back the new Subby into the garage. He gets home, she's crying - tweaked a side-view mirror on the door-frame backing into garage, enough to damage it.

He calms her down, not a big deal dear...... Next day he goes to hop into the Subby to drive to the dealership. Nothing, nada, zip......... had to be flat-decked to the dealer to have the mirror replaced. Because of the Lane Change/Collison Avoidance/ Don't Look at Anything but What We Show You On-Screen tech on-board, engine-start was disabled until That ^ system was repaired and calibrated.

I don't have a particular hate-on for Subby (I don't doubt many other modern cars would behave the same....), but I find it absolutely hilarious (well, for me, at a distance.....) how that vehicle is marketed. Outdoor, Active-Lifestyle, Off-road destined......

Can see it now...... spend many hours driving into a seriously remote part of Canada, well out of cell-range, with a kayak or 2 on-roof....... back into a very tight remote spot, tweak that same mirror on a tree you didn't see...... Good times !

There is plenty of tech that is useful/helpful..... just not a fan of getting kicked in the ___________ by it.....

Dual-Sport MC are a good example of appropriate control of tech. Better modern ones are factory capable of turning the ABS Off - what you want to be able to do off-road. That's one place (at least for now), that the designers over-ruled the lawyers.

I guess the brushes on my Onan/Kubota 7.5 conventional, couldn't be easier to get at. Been meaning to put the screen back on for years.

Friend sent me a picture of his AIR COOLED 12.5 KW Lister/Stamford. Not what I expected. Came out of a Federal Lighthouse for backup. Kind of tickled my jealous bone a bit! Maybe the lifting eyes on the alternator did it, or the grey paint. lol

I am trying to get him to send more pictures. Almost pornographic!

All three!!

SR

Before that last tour, Mick had to go for surgery, based on the Lloyds of London medical he had to pass. At the same time, there was a pic of Keef, hanging out on a balcony, no shirt on, beer in one hand, cigarette in the other....... Good to Go !!!!
:drink:

Given how many never believed Elvis was gone..... I'd say there is plenty of our generation that will never believe Keef has passed.....

I remember when Mick was involved with Maggi, the Mother of our Evil PM. Seems like yesterday.
