Look like UPS is overwhelmed with packages from online shopping (which is up like never before) and have started using U Haul rental trucks to make some deliveries

UPS: Don?t Panic If Your Package Is Delivered By A Driver Behind The Wheel Of A U-Haul ? Consumerist

WSJ reported today that UPS cant handle the increased volume.

UPS also quietly changed the length of time it takes to deliver some packages this holiday season, sparking consumer unhappiness

UPS put a small notice in its customer magazine that it would extend the time it would take to deliver a "limited" number of ground packages with transit times of three days or more by one extra day between Nov. 23 and Dec. 30.

UPS isn't the only one. Fedex has been using U-Haul and Budget wrent-a-wrecks around here for quite a while.

I saw a "FedEx" sign stuck to the side of a rental truck yesterday. I also saw something I had not seen in the past. A UPS local delivery truck pulling a fairly large trailer. It was in UPS brown, so not a rental.

Maybe Fed-ex and UPS should amalgamate, they could call the new company Fed-Up.:D
I'll shut up now and sit in the corner.

Two days ago I had a UPS delivery. It was +52F degrees here, pretty darn warm for December in VT.

And I said to the delivery guys, there were two in the truck (already  ) "When UPS made a delivery here on this exact same date last year they were running rear tire chains on the truck. I have a photo." The driver said "That was me! And I remember because my wife reminded me about that on way out this morning." :D

One of our local UPS drivers stops at the plant where I work everyday as he starts his route. He comes from a terminal about 30 miles away, and in the busy season (like this) he always pulls a UPS brown trailer and drops it in one of our parking lots. He then returns throughout the course of the day and gets more packages from it to deliver. I'm assuming he has enough deliveries in a small area that it makes sense to take two loads with him to keep him from having to return to terminal.

I've also noticed that during this season, UPS often "team delivers" where there are two people in the cab. While one is out taking the package to the door, the other is getting the next delivery staged.

Even if UPS is going to take an extra day or two, I'm still amazed at their efficiency and the fact that I can order something from the west coast, and 4-5 days later it shows up on my porch. Not too shabby...

Good luck and take care.

I was doing a job for a client in the older part of town where the streets are all lined with big old oak trees and covered in leaves. I see a guy in golf cart, pulling a trailer pull up to the house next door and deliver a package. He was wearing a UPS uniform and when I asked him about driving the golf cart, he said that he did this every year for Christmas and that the police didn't bother him. He said that they had an agreement that allowed them to drive the golf cart on the roads without a license plate or being street legal. I thought it was interesting that the police department allowed UPS to operate outside the vehicle laws in order to get the packages delivered.
