I went to a scrapyard today to look for some steel. As a newbie welder I hit the jackpot. I struck up conversation with a young guy in the yard with a Lincoln engine driven welder in the back of his truck. He is a pipeliner. He was free for the rest of the day and offered to come to my house for some one on one instruction. We burned a lot of rods and had a few beers too. It was a great afternoon. My hats off to this generous young man!!

I found a Belarus tractor like my old one, had some parts I needed. I told the guy I would buy the whole tractor and take off what parts I needed and give him the tractor back FREE with my old parts too. The owner said nope:mad:

Nice to hear there are still people willing to share what they know, without any expectation of something in return.

I really love pilffering thru all the junk piled up at the scrap yards. It seems now, more than in the past, that there is just a lot of old used equipment being sold for scrap. I have a inside scoop on what is being brought in because my neices husband works at the scrapyard. he is always calling me whenever someone brings in something that I might be interested in. A few wks ago someone scraped a old ditchwitch backhoe attachment. I was able to salvage a 6spool control valve for my splitter build for only $10. Good Angle and tubing for $0.20lb beats paying $1lb for new everyday. I am going next wk to pickup a almost new rebuilt 366 truck motor, can hear run, complete with all pullies, brackets, alternator, carb, and starter and expect to pay around $150. I will be putting this motor in my 1ton pickup to make a tow rig out of.

Its sad to see some of the stuff that goes. THe big yard in corinth get alot of ag stuff but wont resell anything. I saw a big lister plow like I want set up like a middle buster an a JD tool bar. No sale. they also took a nice running 9000 Ford tractor that the owner thought he would get rich off of up there. He made 400 dollars. they wouldnt sell it either just sheared it up. I was hauling alot of remnant shavings there from work and after the 2 times of them not reselling to me I took our companies business elsewhere. The other local one stopped savlaging but i do alot of work for them so I can walk the yard and trade or buy.

THe big industrial one in town thats nearest me I have free reing over it. THe manager is a good guy and likes to see the place make money one way or another. If theres an item you like you can even trade equal weight for the item. I als help take care of there wood waste they get in when they get packaged items. Ill take their wood waste to save them a dump fee. And I bring the workers gatorrade or produce in the summer and If I need some cut off or set down they stop what they do ande get it to me lol.

In our city we have a recycle site run by the city.
They sort out the stuff; paint here, steel that bin, wood there and tires in that pile.
I check out the paint from time to time. Recent picks; 3/4 gal tremclad black, 1/2 gal primer and about 1 dz barely used rattle cans of varied colors.
He even helped me to sort out good used tires for my trailer.
I always slip him a couple of $$ for his help.

I just can't believe what folks toss out!
Once picked a vaccume cleaner that needed a plug and one wheel! ( it was a top brand and excellent condition otherwise.
I have seen real good snow blowers that simply needed a minor engine tune up or pull cord. You just never know.
I never (or rarely) buy new steel. Always visit the yard first.
Last time there I found buckets of 2-3" DOM in all sizes. Great for bushings!.
(I took all the 1/2, 3/4, 7/8 and 1" pieces they had. By the lb I think it cost me all of $4.00! and I have enough for years to come!
As someone once said, "free steel is great", well with inflation I don't mind stocking for a few $$.

What parts are you looking for and what model? I have several sources on them, and know them pretty much inside and out.
