I just got this message from my accountant, though I might put it out there for giggles.

"The IRS just announced that those taxpayers that itemize deductions may not be able to file their tax returns until mid to late February, 2011. This is due to Congress passing tax legislation late in December and as a result the IRS has to re-program their computers."

I think it's likely that since the returns with refunds will all be getting there at the same time, it will be a long wait.

File early what's that. 4/15 for me. I always owe them so they get theirs on 4/15

It may not be the smartest thing to do, but I plan mine so that I get a refund each year. It's usually early February when I get everything I need and can file our return, but for 2010, I filed (electonically, of course) on January 24 and the refund was deposited in our checking account before 9 a.m. on February 1. I've never filed that early before and never got a refund that quickly before.

Another prime example why those morons had NO reason to do anything during a lame duck session. Costing taxpayers yet even more money. A lot of folks count on getting their returns early and this will hurt them.
