My 83-year-old father has never used a computer. He used to use word processors but that's as far as he progressed. He had WebTV while it was around but after that he threw in the towel. He never could get the hang of a mouse.

Circa 1995 when Hospital Desktops widely deployed it triggered some retirements… very good old school nurses that had a career filled with paper records and red and blue pencils to differentiate between day and night shifts retired…

Not always, Dad is still carrying a rural route 6 days per week. He does have to use an electronic "clip board" but not a computer per se. He's pulling down about 100K with mileage reimbursement.

That's pretty cool! And also a little depressing. Those were my college and early working years.


My daughter likes to really drive the nail home by calling my childhood "the olden days." I don't think she distinguishes between my youth in the 1970's - 1990's, from my parents in the 1940's and 50's, or my grandparents in the 1910's - 30's.

My granddaughter says her parents are so old, they had wooden headphones.

You know you are old if you remember when $100,000/year salary was a lot. I remember when I was a kid, I thought "Boy, if I EVER can make the $17,000/year my Dad makes, I will be RICH!".
