Twenty years ago I’d have jumped the brook.

Boy that brings back memories... of what? I don't remember.

Oh yeah, we used to have a little creek we'd try and jump as kids. Young kids always fell in. As you got older, you remember the first time you made it across. What a leap!

In my mid 20s I went back, and it was just a small trickle I could hop over easily. :p

Went back a couple years ago and like you, I made the decision to go around. ;)

Your kids laughing hysterically at you when your attempting to run playing games like soccer with them.

You're old, they're kids. You have money, they generally don't.
They laugh at you for ANY reason cut off their allowance or inheritance. They won't laugh anymore.

Going away on a company trip to a resort down south outside the country Thursday morning.

Wife informed me that I'm not taking my favorite brown slacks because they are so old and I look like a bum in them, and they should not be worn to a nice restaurant with other people I know.

I'm old enough that I'm starting to agree with her LOL

About 40 years ago I stopped jumping and trying to cross on rickety logs and started just either going around or just walking through if it wasn't over pocket deep. So far I've always dried out.

Lol or obnoxiously and sarcastically play with your new found uncoordinated stumbling.

When I was 50 (16 years ago) I had to cross a shallow, relatively wide brook. No problem, there was a nice high bank so I stepped back about 10 feet, got a running start and jumped. As my feet pushed off I thought "oh yeah, I'm not 20 anymore" as I plummeted toward the water. It was only about a foot deep but as I touched down I bent my knees to soften the landing, while the water splashed up soaking me to my waist.
I'd have stayed drier if I'd done as you say, and just waded through.
