You Know You Are Old When

I went to school with some Mennonites and to me it seems some are more strict than Amish.
A Mennonite friend could drive a car but no chrome anywhere, black bumpers, etc.
I'm not following you. Driving a car is considerably less strict than the Amish. In my hometown, there was conflict around laws that the Amish put an orange reflective triangle on the back of their buggies. The bright color was against their principles.

Wife and I noticed the other night that the Amish buggies now have headlights, taillights, and turn signals. Very bright LEDs. Hope it saves some lives. At least once a year there's a car/buggy crash and someone dies.

Apparently every sect is different as to what is allowed. The ones around here have refused to use the slow moving vehicle signs.

We see some here with lights, SMVs and other warning devices. Others are still plain black, virtually invisible in poor light.
The God which I learned about would tell them that He gave them hi-vis devices as well as a brain to utilize them for their own safety.

My (very limited) understanding is it all depends on their sect, church, etc. so there's an "overlap"(???) between Mennonite & Amish. We see in Amish country some don't have mechanized anything, working with horses. Some steel wheel tractors, some rubber tire tractors. Some we see riding in cars & trucks (do they drive them?).
It seems complicated.

I was a child of the 60's. Barbers lost customers and Beauticians gained customers because they could trim/style long hair without using a buzzer.
Some of those old school barbers were awful! I swear some of them intentionally did a bad job just to show those *&^%# hippies what they thought of long hair on men. I never had *long* hair, but it was longer than my father's generation liked. Too bad if they didn't like it.
In the early 70s an enterprising woman opened a barbershop (men only...in my state you had to be licensed separately for men & women) with all female barbers in the city where I lived at the time. They did a good job, and the shop was a success.

It is complicated. The norm is that the Amish will ride in a car, but they won't own or operate one.

A general theme is them maintaining a separation of their society from our overall infrastructure. Some are OK with having a cell phone, but they won't allow public utilities to be run to their house.

“You know you are old when”:

You can remember when local railroad tracks had active trains running on them, but now they’re abandoned and overgrown with 30’ tall junk trees growing out of them.

My barber started in his first shop 67 years ago… Covid shut it all down so he had been cutting hair in his home garage… only for regulars but does a nice job and enjoys it.
