Yo!! My Chicks Are Ugly

Whoa! I really think this stage is sooooo craggy and ugly. Cannot wait until they feather out, but these 3 week old ISA's won't be pretty for quite some time. Love the adult look, but until then.... whew.

Good eye. Red Rocks X is the "other". Black Star is a name also used for that cross of Barred Rock/RIR.

The 15 ISA Browns are a first for me, this year. The manager of a local Family Farm store practically gave them to me. I know they are the egg laying queens, but we shall see if their temperament is to my liking. I grew up with White Rocks and still have an affection for the Rock family.

At 7 weeks, the chicks have feathered out and are now very pretty.
I have taken them off the high energy starter.

Reminds of when wife first started raising chicks. She asked me to look on the internet to find instructions on how you separate boys and girls. So I entered "Sexing Chicks" on Google. Brought up some verr-rr-y interesting results, especially with the wife looking over my shoulder!

Time for an update. 5 months old, and the pullets have begun doing their thing!!!

OK, the chicks formerly known as ugly have grown to be very handsome young hens. Hatch to egg laying, 4 months on the Red Star type Isa Browns.

The Black Star (Barred Rock x RIR) has yet to begin to lay. That heritage is proving to be a little slower in development.

Suddenly, I have three more regular egg customers for long term.
Thus, had to call a hatchery and get 2 dozen chicks on order. Will be delivered after Labor Day. Should begin laying around New Year.

Had I known, I wouldn't have sold off that dozen point of lay pullets last month. Who knew?

Pix promised when they get here and get settled in.
