In my 4th year with the 2210D; she's been great. I've handled all issues myself with advice from Dealer but have one now that I need help with. 4WD capacity is gone. Problems started when in forward with fits and starts ONLY when in 4WD. Now in Reverse as well. Really not a pretty sound if I try to move in 4WD, a harsh grinding sound with little or no traction. 2WD functions fine. Fluids are OK. Has anyone been there? Any advice?

Doesn't sound good. Assuming the noise is coming from front I would jack up front end and turn one of the wheels. This will help check out the differential. Maybe this would help you pinpoint where the problem lies. Sounds like bearings or gears.

Winston, yes, I believe it's bearing and/or gears. Thanks.

RGood, thanks for forwarding the thread with the issues you faced. While I had hoped to be able to repair it myself, this looks/sounds daunting and I'll probably do what you did -- take it in for some qualified help. If you'd make the time I'd like to speak with you by phone because it sounds like I have precisely what your problem was. Email me your phone number and I'll give you a call at a time that works for you. Many thanks. Bill in Virginia

4WD on my 2210D is repaired. It was the drive shaft. It's a funky mechanism on both ends of the drive train that probably isn't the most effective engineering (it's 1979, after all, so I'm not complaining). Thanks to "rgood" on this forum who was most helpful in providing preliminary guidance having had a similar problem. Also thanks to Wayne at Little Miami Tractor Co. for helping me diagnose which parts were needed and which would provide a more effective fix and then locating them and arranging speedy shipment. Also changed knuckle seals in each front wheel as fluid leaks had begun. Parts were $440. Labor was $220. Tractor runs better than the day I got it and it's great to have her back in service. Bill
