You missed the point. You don't tell them its for a Yanmar. You just go in and say you want a key for a John Deere 850 tractor. And they will sell it to you. There is no need to tell them, what you are going to use it for. I don't know of anything, that you buy from anyone, that you have to tell them what you are going to use what you buy from them for. I agree, if you go in and run your mouth, about what you want it for, they won't sell it to you. I go down and buy a computer, they aren't going to ask me if I am going to use it for email or what ever, it just isn't done. I'm not trying to be nasty, its just the way it is.

Ya'll must have some hateful dealers. I have went in with the Yanmar key in hand and had them match it, same with a headlight bulb. Heck the Massey dealer here in town has called me at home to ask a grey market part question when a customer came to them looking for a part.

Bought spares for my YM1700 at local JD dealer. Just asked for key for JD 850, handed me 2 in a pack for $5. I didn't lie when I ask for key for 850 and they didn't ask what I was gonna use it on. By the way they work perfect.

So, at this point it has become obvious.... However I will feel better after asking..

Are they all the same for a Yanmar? I noticed some have mentioned different models and the answer has always been JD850. I would just hate to go buy one, even though it is cheap, and get home to find out it wont work..

Thanks.

No, they are not all the same. Usually the ones without the thermostart option use a different key than the ones with thermostart.

There are generally only 3 keys that are used on Yanmars. You might find one that is different, if they have changed switches. And there are a very few models that use a different key. The 1401D is the only one, that I know of. But the one most used is a double cut key, that fits the most, the one for the JD850 #CH12206. I think all the other ones that don't fit are single cut keys. They are enough different that you should see the difference when you go to buy it. There is a lot of difference in a double cut and a single cut, it shows right up.

I have purchased several keys from the same guy on ebay. It comes on an ILCO 1519 blank that any key maker can get. I did have to smooth the edges some so it would go in smoother.

Well, thats good to know. When I got to get one, I'll be sure to match it up anyhow. My 2000 has a single cut. Thanks...

Like pruntyc says, the double cut key used in most is JD part #CH12206
The 1401d single cut key blank that I use is a ILCO TA6.
I think it's an old Toyota (1970's) blank.

Just a remark for everybody on this thread : In France you can tell what you want to a JD dealer (Yanmar Kubota or other brands) : he just cannot refuse to sell you something he has in his shop because there is a law against this behaviour.

I just bought a set of keys for a 850 from JD for my F16D. Works great. I ask them if they would refuse to sell me one if I said what it really was for. I told them it was for a grey market tractor. He just grinned and said, Yanmar? And he also said that yanmar does not make any of John Deere tractors. Hmmmmm?

/ ym2000 key #32
I think he's right. I think Yanmar only makes engines for a JD model or two now, but not any complete tractors.

Yanmar still builds the JD 790 and 990. At one time they built the JD4100 and I think maybe the 2210. They definately still build the 790 and 990.

Ok, here's a summary for the next new owner who asks what to look for in a spare key.

The attached photo shows my original Yanmar key. I think this type fits nearly all Yanmars that use a double-cut key. Also in the original Yanmar 'ignition' switch there is a copy of that key, on an ilco blank, that I bought on ebay. I've learned from this thread that a JD 850 key is the same thing and is less expensive than an ebay purchase.

The photo also shows a replacement switch from Hoye installed on the tractor, and its key. That switch has a shutter for the keyhole; the original switch didn't have a shutter. Its key labelled 'FII' is not the same cut as the original Yanmar key.

My YM2000 also has a shuttered ignition. I thought it was OEM. My key has a rubber covered head with Yanmar on it. The blank is identical to the other Yanmar key and the cut is identical.

My JD 850 key works in my YM2610 with no issues. One key has a leaping deer and the other has the word Yanmar over a bold circle. Lay one atop the other, and these two are identical.
