I have 3 acres pasture type grass that I want to cut once a month. I am leaning towards a YM1700 with a 4' rough cut. I want to spend $3k to $4k . I always believed in kiss. Do you think that set up will work for me? Do you think mow time will be 2 to 3 hrs with few trees? I notice an ad that said the tractors are recon in the USA. I am in south LA.

ITS HARD TO GIVE ADVICE ON YOUR TYPE OF SITUATION. BUT YOU WILL NOT GO WRONG WITH A YANMAR, I THINK THE TRACTOR YOU ARE LOOKING AT WILL DO THE JOB. RESEARCH THE DEALER YOU ARE CONSIDERING AND BE SURE OF YOUR PURCHASE. I PERSONALLY WOULD LIKE A TRACTOR IN A ORIGINAL CONDITION SO I KNOW HOW THE TRACTOR HAS BEEN USED. RECONDITIONED TRACTORS ARE SUBJECT TO A LOT OF FACTORS BEYOND YOUR CONTROL. THE DEALER YOU ARE CONSIDERING IS THE BIGGEST FACTOR IN YOUR PURCHASE. GOOD LUCK.

The YM1700 will do what you want. I originally bought one that overheated the first time I used it(mechanical issue, not the tractor size).. I didnt feel safe buying that particular tractor and the only replacement he had was the YM2000.. The YM2000 was only a couple hundred more and has a larger seating area, you may be more comfortable with.. I recomend trying a couple different models to see wich one you like the best, as you will probably spend much more time than you think in that seat..:D You wont be dissapointed with a Yanmar, they are great tractors.. The dealer is your biggest hurdle, do as much homework as possible... Find as many references as possible, some of the other guys have recomended getting references a couple years old to get an idea of long term dealer satisfaction(good idea).. After buying mine, I would choose a dealer who frequents this sight rather than the one I bought from because the guy I bought from is more of a selling agent than a dealer(if that makes sense).. He was a nice guy and didnt do me wrong, but I cannot call him with issues and if I were to take it back to him, he would likely have to ship it out of state for repairs(major pain since I thought he could do the repairs)... Either way, I have only had minor issues with leaks.. Nothing out of the ordinary for a 30yr old tractor and I kinda like working on it..The guys here are very helpfull and straight forward.. Do some searches on buying a Yanmar and you will see allot of recomendations, all end with the choosing the right dealer..

I have a ym1700, its been a very good tractor. they dont have water pumps on them, thats why some folks go to the bigger tractor. I put gauges on mine just to see the real temp.its been a 104 degrees and my tractor runs at 180 degrees when i use a 4' brush hog. I see you want to spend 3 to 4 thousand dollars, you should be able to pickup a plain 2 wheel drive 1700 from a good dealer for a few hundred dollars under 3000 and you can get a used 4' brush hog for 200 to 400 hundred dollars. Good luck on your tractor.

Yamnar 1700's operator position is a little too small for me. My feet get tangeled in the petals making operation unsafe. If you are a large person, long leggs, or big feet check the tractor fit before you buy.. if you have hilly or severe terrain 4wd will be a must. These tractors are light and will slide down a steep slope withthe brakes locked. A kit can be installed to add a water pump to the tractor if it run hotter than you want. most of the time the engine runs too cool when the cooling system is in good shape.

I have had a YM1700 for nearly 2 years. It has beed a good tractor. I cut about 5 acres every 2 weeks with it. I have a 4' brush cutter, 4' box blade, 4' disc. The tractor handles these implements well. The only problems I had was the cooling system. I had the radiator professionally cleaned, installed temp and oil gauges, and the correct antifreeze-water mixture (30/70) and now it runs cool ( 140 - 150 degrees regardless of the outside temp). If you get one make sure you get and overrun clutch for use with the brush cutter.

A 4' mower is a good match for a 1700. When we bouhgt our property. we only had 3 ac and a 1700. i was using a borrowed ford 590 4' mower. Was a perfect fit. and yes. your 2-3 hour time frame is good, depending on just how many obstacles you have.

I sometimes wonder about the 'recon' models... Just why was it reconned?

You can listen to Soundguy, as he should know, all about tractors. By the way Soundguy, just how many tractors do you have?? And how did you get your wife to go along with getting that many? Mine says one is enough.
