YM 1700
1700 running fine. Went into house for a few minutes (left her running). Came back and pushed in clutch but gears grind /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif...cannot get it in gear. Adjusted linkage to make a little longer...but didn't over do it. Suggestions? I'm incompetent on mechanical stuff but have buddies here who are good. Thanks! Steve

If you still feel the same spring tension when you depress the clutch pedal, and no strange noises, I guess the clutch disk could have stuck to the flywheel/pressureplate. Although it would be odd to happen while it was running. If that is the case, I freed up a car clutch once by pushing up against a tree, put in gear, depress clutch and bump starter. Others will probably have suggestions if you can determine that is the problem. Worst case, something broke on the pressure plate/throwout bearing and you will have to split it.

Update. After reading Norm's note I went out and beat on it /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif...aside from letting me vent, nothing. I did lower the RPM way down and can get it in 1st and Reverse with no grinding, with or without the pedle being pushed. Maybe this nugget of info gives you guru's a clue? Thanks again, Steve

"can get it in 1st and Reverse with no grinding, with or without the pedle being pushed."

If that's the case, sounds like the disk may have come apart. Sounds like a "split" job in any case. Will it move once it is in gear?

Oh yes...it will move along. I put it low range so that wouldn't smash anything. I just idled very slow...put it low...and then into 1 or reverse (no pedel) and she crawls along. Strange that it ran fine and I went into the house for a Pepsi (left it running) and when I came back it ground a pound when I went to put it in gear. Tnx, Steve

You got me......I can't imagine a non-synchro gear tranny going into gear at all without disengaging the clutch if it is engaged to start with. Maybe some help will jump in here. Still probably going to require a split.

Back to my original diagnosis, since you can get it to move in gear, drive it around with the clutch pedal depressed, maybe pulling something heavy to put pressure on the clutch, and see if it will break loose.

IMHO, there was a genltleman who split his tractor recently just to replace (instal) t/o bearing return springs to replace a nylon tie strap.
But the original symptons are similar. If you can access t/o bearing and shaft by lifting steering box you can observe travel before you split your tractor. Occassionaly travel is obstructed if uneven tension is applied to throwout bearing and shaft (travel).
Have to agree with Norm though.......need to split and pull pp t/o bearing and disk to be sure.

If it is a froze/stuck pressure plate.. this is what we do ith old fords when the trany input seal leaks and the oil gums up the clutch. We block the clutch down overnight.. that usually gets it loose. Failing that we start it in gear, low rpm.. etc, and drive around with the clutch blocked down, and do figure 8's the differential action loads up the drive train a bit. Occasionally for stubborn ones you can alternate stomping on right then left brake.. or both..

I fthe center of the clutch came out.. I can't imagine it driving around...

Could the clutch release fork have come loose?.. no I gues sthere would be no spring pressure then? hmm

Looks like you may have your first greasy hands getting it fixed.

I just pulled the belly pump and hyd top cover off my 8n today.. 70$ worth of parts later, the pump is back in, and the top cover has a new hyd piston and new gaskets.. and there is alotta oil on my garage floor that the wife doesn't know about YET..

Thanks for the new hints (and GREAT to see Mark777 back in action!). I'll try all these this afternoon before making the drastic plunge of seeing what the YM looks like in 2 sections! Soundguy, I remember now discussion on the Ford boards of blacking the clutch down...will try that too. Anything is easier that major surgery! If anymore inspiration strikes, holler. Thanks guys, Steve
