ym155 transmission stuck when in gear

I am attempting to place a ym155 into working order. The tractor has been idle in a garage for about 5 years. The motor is not stuck (can be turned by bolt on front of engine). The transmission appears to be stuck when in any gear except neutral. I have changed the transmission fluid and noticed some small shavings in the screen of the filter (which I have cleaned). Any advice on how to attack this problem?

Welcome vetiver,

If the engine turns over freely, it may be your clutch disk is frozen to the flywheel from surface rust. If not, then you may need to remove the lift arm assembly and inspect the gears. Gentle persuasion with a pry bar and rocking with the rear wheels off the ground my reveal a broken tooth that has lodged in your gear set.

Will the tractor roll when out of gear? If not check the brakes. As mark777 indicated the clutch may be a problem. Will the engine turn with the tractor in gear and the clutch depressed?. With the clutch depressed and trans out of gear will the pto engaged will the pto shaft rurn? Whti the clutch depressed and tractor in gear will the tractor roll (with powershift this is very hard to do unless tractor is on high range). If it appears thet the trans is locking up remove the shifter and see if anything is bent or broken. Someone may have tried to force a shift and bent something.

The tractor rolls when out of gear in neutral. The tractor will not roll when in gear with or without the clutch depressed. The pto will turn by hand in both directions when in the down (1) or neutral (middle) positions. The pto will turn by hand clockwise only in the upper (2) position. Should I leave the transmission fluid in (just changed this) when I remove the shifter plate (4 bolts) and the plate under the shifter (8 bolts)? Or can the shifter plate remain attached to the lower plate with the 8 bolts and remove both at the same time? The "lift arm assembly" does not seem to be in the way of this plate with 8 bolts.

Sounds to me like a stuck clutch plate is all you have.....

That's what I think. They're bad about doing that. Someone on an earlier post said to start out of gear and let run until every thing gets hot then shut it off and let it set over night. Then see if it's still stuck.

My neighbor has a Mitsubishi, if he leaves it for a week without the clutch locked down it will stick every time.

If this were a stuck clutch I would think the engine would turn when I pushed it
in first gear. However, even with the injectors out it does not budge (roll) when I push the tractor in gear. It is not running at present. I am trying to solve the transmission problem before trying to get it running. I am a little worried that it might mess up the transmission more if the engine were running and I put it in gear.

I may have misunderstood. I thought you said it would turn over just fine in neutral with a wrench?

So, clue us in a bit........the engine can be turned over with a wrench, will it turn over with the starter? Can you get the transmission into neutral?

If the engine can be turned with the trans in gear and the clutch depressed it is not a stuck clutch. If the engine cannot be turned with the clutch depressed theris a aclutch problem.

Get the engine running then start it in gear. Drive it around with the clutch pedal depressed and slam on the brakes a few times. That should unstick the clutch.
