I am sure this gets over discussed every year about this time but want advice from people who will know better than I do:

My 336D has an engine block heater that is leaking coolant and shorts out the plug when it gets attached to power. Can not tell where the leak is but is the easiest fix to get a new heater? Does anyone have any good reports on the magnetic heaters? Are they reliable and will they stay on while the tractor is running or are you apt to loose them in the snow? I have had local people give me an endless string of answers from replacing the original block heater, to installing the one inline on the radiator hose to using the magnetic heaters. Do not have a better idea now than when I started to get an answer on how to fix this problem. I just know that if it is in the 20's, this tractor is going to object to starting without getting some heat into her.

I have had a couple magnetic heaters. They barely help - a little. But, after I drove over the cord of mine last year, I plan on putting in a radiator hose heater (well, one that fits inside the lower radiator hose) (I think).

I wish I could find a block heater for my F16, I think that's a better solution.

I guess I'm running all 3 kinds. In my YM 3000 I have a rad hose heater installed in the lower hose, also have a mag stick on heater I used on the same tractor before installing the rad hose heater. My JD 950 has the screw in block heater.
Best seams to be the screw in heater in the 950, works fastest, least heat loss. Second is the rad hose heater in the Yanmar. ( almost the same engine ) The mag heater works, but is marginal at best on the coldest days. If you have a choice, choose to replace the screw in and call it good, best fix.

Does anyone know where I can find one for my F16? I'd rather have that, but figured I wouldn't be able to find one.

Find a dealer that sells Kim Hot-Start. In the back of the Hot-Start catalog they have the listing for Yanmar. Set comes with heater plug ( screw in ) detachable cord. Not much money, as I remember, less than $50. Easiest to install, remove the plug in the block that is above the starter, screw in the heater, done. Because you are replaceing a faulty unit, I have to assume you do have the threaded hole in the block above the starter. Some Yanmars don't have this. My early YM 3000 with a 3T84 engine is one of the ones that don't, that's why the inline rad hose heater. The JD 950 has a Yanmar 3T90, and it does have the threaded hole. Shouldn't be hard to find.

thanks for the help. It does have the screw in block heater now. Has gone bad evidently after 23 years. Should ask for a partial refund from the Dealer

Ordered a new one this morning and hope it goes in without any real heartburn. Should be ready to start pushing snow in no time.
