I am curious as to what kind of mpg our Yanmar's would get if driving over the road. Any idea?

Based on 3rd gear, high range, 2400 rpm equals 14.19 miles per hour using 5 gallons of diesel in 8 hours I come out with 113.52 miles divided by 5 equals 22.704 miles per gallon. How does that sound? :D

Woops, mine is a 2002d, gearing probably different on a 2000.

....22mpg not bad! I guess if I needed too I could drive my tractor to the beach and only use about fifteen gallons. :)

I have a 1961 Fordson Dexta as well as my F215.
I use the Dexta for ploughing matches so I have to drive reasonable distances on road to get there. Travelling at max speed of about 16 mph on road it does 20mpg (UK) - which I think is pretty good for a tractor.

23 mph sounds real good compared to my 6.0L chevy truck. Also......my FEL would come in real handy on crowded freeways. Probably would need to go with turf tires as well but what the heck!

I read your post earlier this morning, so I started investigating. At zero load, the YM240 uses 0.369 gallons per hour to run 2581 RPM. (According to Nebraska Tractor Test 1199.) According to my operator manual, with 9.5-24 tires, maximum speed is 9.11 MPH at 2600 RPM. That works out to 24.7 MPG. However, that is without any load on the engine.

At 4.5 horsepower, consumption is 0.534 GPH, and works out to 17 MPG. If it takes 8.9 horsepower to drive the machine, MPG drops to only 12.5 with 0.726 GPH.

With larger 11.2-24 tires, figures would be 26.2, 18.1, and 13.3 MPG.

I don't think this accurately represents what would happen if the power plant were put into a car, though. It is accurate for driving your tractor down the road, and that is all. Brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) averages 0.546 pounds of fuel consumed per hour to produce one horsepower. The specific fuel consumption figures are very close to the efficiency of a GM 4.3 liter V-6 (BSFC of 0.502). I was surprised to learn that the gas V-6 is actually more efficient than the diesel. This will bear more investigation, and has piqued my curiosity. I'm guessing that the gas engine is benefitting from running at peak efficiency (since it is at full throttle) and those figures cannot represent real world partial RPM consumption figures. Running at full throttle makes gasoline engines much more efficient, but isn't representative of real-world usage as a general rule.

While those numbers all sound reasonable for a tractor driven on pavement, I expect these engines would get far better mileage installed in a car.

After all, they are only 1100 cc and near-record fuel efficient. So the nearest comparable car might be late 70's VW Rabbit diesel etc. 50 mpg???

My guess is that if you drove your car 14mph that you would get equal or better mileage. My wife's suburban has that current MPG display and at a steady 20mph or so it is getting WAY better mileage than that. It goes down pretty fast from there though :)

FWIW... here is a guy that puts diesel tractor engines in pickups...

yea i linked to a Ga guy putting tractor engines in older ford trucks in a deisel thread a month or two ago. He is getting i think in the thirties with ford 3cyl deisel tractor engines maybe 4 cyl ones out of like ford 2000s and similar era tractor engines. You will get way better than 20 mpg in a trcuck as the gearing will allow you to travel faster at a given rpm, covering more ground for the same engine speed.

Man you 2 cyl guys that can get 14 mph would smoke me I would lose sight of you in a minute or 2!

I get about 9 mph at wot close to 2800 rpm. Bet my mileage is no where near as good either its real good for a tractor I think but 22 is very impressive and I am not completely surprised either never would have thought about it though!

9mph is tops for you! That is super slow, heck i think i mow at 7-8mph most of the time?

Yeah seriously no kidding its that slow I mow in high gear mostly! I roaded it once about 9 miles on dirt roads because I had a car trailer full of firewood and didn't want to make 2 trips.

I had my buddy drive the pickup and it took every bit of an hour and then some he told me what the speeds were. Got to see some country though about like horse back with a diesel sound and smell hahaha!

Your first gear must be so slow you have to go inside get a drink and come back out to actually know it moved. You probly cant see it if your looking at it!

Yea, that dont sound too bad but reverse figuring puts it at about 330 miles. Or about 22 hours to get there:shocked: So ya might want to leve wendsday for that weekend trip:laughing:

Yes it is very very slow and my tires are a tiny bit oversized to boot I wish it was geared a bit higher personally! One of my buddy's who I got the idea to buy Yanmar in the first place has a 2620D and he said that right off the low gears on these are so low you could literally leave them run over nite in creep 1 and still wouldn't have left the yard.

I agree now I have one and I will probably never use the creep gears for actual work maybe a demonstration now and then but thats about it what they are good for hahaha!
