Yet Another 24D Question

The TC24D I'm looking at will have to have the 12LA FEL ordered and installed by the dealer. I've read on TBN where others have recommended getting a 4-spool valve installed instead of the standard 3-spool valve to allow for future hydraulic functions (4 in 1, grapple, etc.).

Again, I hate to beat this hydraulic thing to death (I've already asked about adding top and tilt), but if this (a) possible to do on the 24D and (b) financially advantageous to do it at the time the fel is installed instead of later them it seems to me like a worthwhile thing to consider.

Any thoughts?

The anonymity this forum is great. I can bounce the stupid questions around here before I embarass myself face-to-face with my dealer. I appreciate everyone's helpfulness and understanding.

I don't know if "spool" is the right word, but anyway, the New Holland loaders come with a 4 "way" valve for the FEL. What this means is you have Power UP/DOWN "Float", Power curl/slow dump and "fast dump". Fast dump has a regenerative feature on it that cycles the oil thru quicker (gravity is helping).

The three "way" valve, has Power UP/DOWN, Float and Curl/Fast dump. Since is only has the Fast dump, it can't be used on a normal two way hydraulic cylinder for example a front plow angle.

The problem is only an issue on Kubotas that I'm aware of. There is a better post explaining it by KubMech, but I couldn't find it when I searched.

The New Holland owners manual describes this pretty well.

You don't get extra functionality when the loader is on ie Grapple, 4 in one etc. You either need to add diverter valves, or plumb some hose from your rear remote. You are getting the Top & Tilt right? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

A diverter valve is basically an electrically operated "Y" valve. Ie push a button and the oil goes out a new hose instead of operating the loader. Do a search on "diverter valve" or "4 in 1" lots of threads will come up.

To be honest, don't know how usefull a 4 in 1 would be on a TC24, given that the buckets are very heavy & the tractor is small. Worth discussing with your dealer if you are interested.

The 12LA loader has a capacity of 1,090 pounds. Adding a 4 in 1 or a grapple will reduce the amount of weight you can lift in the bucket. If you really want/need these implements, you should consider stepping up to a Class II Boomer.

The 1,090 is at the bucket pivot. Your "useable" weight (evenly distributed) will be somewhat less, probably 750 +/-. My 7106 is only 600 evenly distributed.

Correct. My point, poorly made /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif, to bmac was that if a 4 in 1 or grapple, which is heavier than the standard bucket is on the FEL, the lifting capacity will be reduced by a corresponding amount.

No need to be embarrased, Your point was made. I just wanted to qualify the spec so that bmac didn't get his hopes up that even with a 400 pound 4 in 1 he'd still have 600 pounds of lift capacity.

Just when I think I'm starting to pick up on some of this tractor terminology, I immediately reveal the truth with an inappropriately worded question. Thank you for the fine explanation / clarification.

I'm really making this purchase alot more difficult that it should be. I started out about a year ago lusting after a BX22. Could never find one on the lot to look at so I just read as much as I could about it. As I was over-researching that one I happened upon the Power-Trac forum. Man, what a versatile group of machines! Was on the verge of making a purchase when I got cold feet about the lack of dealerships/service outlets. Decided to look again at the BX22. Finally found a dealership with one on the lot - when I went to look at it, I thought it was a little small for my future needs. This particular dealer carries both Kubota and NH but didn't have a TC24D on the lot. Looked at and liked the 2410 but wanted to compare it with the 24D. This brought me back to my local NH dealer who did have a 24D in stock. Drove it, liked it and he had much better prices.

OK, now, I'm ready to pull the trigger. Back to the forum to check prices, ask questions (again, over-research), etc. Satisfied with my decision, I go by the dealership today to get the financing taken care of, get the FEL and BH ordered, etc. My dealer says, "Bruce, you sure you don't need something bigger?" ARRGH!!! That's all I need, yet another tractor to consider.

Before you question his motives, this dealer is a neighbor and friend. He knows we are about to buy 12 acres on which we will build our next home. He is recommending a 29D for 2 reasons - he thinks it is better sized for my next property and he said it would have better resale value.

Understand, though, he is not pressuring me either way. It looks as though the 24D has been on the lot for some time and he said he really needs to get rid of it. However, he said he doesn't want me coming back dissatisfied after we move.

Well, he had another customer waiting and couldn't give me a price on the 29D at that time. The one on the lot I looked at had Super Steer and 7308 FEL. Sales price was marked at $17,400 but he said he could do better than that. Waiting to hear back from him.

I guess he's following the philosophy many on this forum express - decide what you need then buy one size larger.

Thanks for the reply. Per my reply to Hazmat, I spent a long time on the Power-Trac Forum. Those guys are incredible at engineering the PT to do just about anything. PT even makes grapples and 4 in 1 buckets (appropriately sized, of course) for those small tractors.

Well, while I don't know that I will have a need for either of those, I was just asking if I need to make any special requests to my dealer before he ordered the FEL to allow for flexibility in the future. As Hazmat explained, I was misunderstanding the 4-way vs 3-way remote thing.

Your points on weight are much appreciated. Interestingly, (again, per my last reply), my dealer wants me to consider a 29D. I see from NH specs that the lift capacity of the 7308 FEL is actually less than that of the 12LA. Guess I still can't have my grapple or 4 in 1. Oh, well, probably will never need them anyway.

bmac, I am very happy with my TC25D with 7308. About 6 months after I bought it, NH decided to transform the low end of the Class II range into the top end of the Class I range. The Class I was too small for me and the Class III was too big to fit in my garage, so Class II was it for me. I have yet to exceed the limits of the 7308 or the tractor. It runs out of traction before it runs out of hp.

If you can wait until the 2004 model year comes out, That's when NH is supposedly coming out with a slightly redesigned class II Boomer (TC29/TC33). It will have a newly designed 14LA loader to go with it, which is rumored to have significantly increased lift capacity. (2004 model year availability, fall 2003, for this equipment is per recent conversation with my dealer).

If you can't wait, you can always look at the Woods 1012 loader. It's a good match for the TC29/TC33 and has somewhere around 1100 or 1200# lift capacity, if I remember correctly. That's what I put on my TC33D.
