Tom, the Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo has mountain oysters on their appetizer menu, so I had to order them. The menu says if you think this is seafood, you should order our shrimp cocktail. I didn't tell my wife, daughter, and grandson what they were until after they had discovered they were delicious.

David, I've only been up Pike's Peak one time and that was in August and I was on my R80RT BMW motorcycle. Now you know it's pretty darned warm in August, but I stopped about halfway up and got my jacket and gloves out of the saddlebag. I got to the top at the same time as a young couple from back east, also on a bike, so we went in and had a cup of coffee together then went our separate ways sightseeing a bit. When I went back to the parking lot to leave, they were also getting on their bike. And when I got my gloves out and put them on, she looked at me kinda wistfully and said, "I'll bet you'd want $50 for those gloves." I said, "At least." She said she had thought they would have some she could buy in the gift shop, but they didn't.

Thanks guys, we look at the AAA guide books and if it listed as a Gem, we usually check it out. Most times they are correct. We may stay in Denver for 3 days but it more like the Denver area seeing all the GEMS.

As far as CO Springs, Garden of the Gods is amazing. And if you're into technical climbing and can pull a permit, it has some very fine rock.

We also went to a hot springs near the north entrance of the park. About 1-2 miles north of the campground there is a small parking lot with toilet facilities - no official sign. Follow the trail to the east of the lot, along the river, for about 1/2 mile. The hot springs enter into the river, and you can get in all hot (springs), all cold (river), or find your "just right" mix. I don't think the NPS describes this area in the literature since the site is pretty small and couldn't take the traffic.

Hotels booked

What we did was to book 1 night in Cody, get up tour Yellowstone, stay in West Yellowstone for 1 night and then move down to Jackson Hole for 2 nights, this will give us 4 days in the area, including a river raft trip down the Snake River. Thanks folks for all your suggestions.

NOT a cheap place to stay , we could not find anything less then $160 a night in a decent place. Guess camping is the way to go in this area, BUT not an option for us, wife and 2 teenage girls like running water and a soft bed.

Tom, I am glad to see that you are going to Jackson Hole for 2 days. I was there for a week to go skiing and want to go back for a spring/summer trip so make sure you write a review. Here are some pics of my trip.
