YELLOW FLIES!!!!! AKA Deer Flies

Reading the literature indicated that those traps are not effective unless they are moving. Attach to vehicles, hats, cows, etc. Some have used them on a line or pole where they could move with the breeze.

Also more effective over a meter high.

Could be a new tractor attachment!

Gotcha - They are up about 6 feet and moving with the breeze on string lines. If I get any action on them, I'll attach some to my tractor canopy with string. I also remembered I made a funky rig last year(?) with a umbrella attached to wind-up rotating disk. Now if I can just find darn thing...

Nice move, Doug, hanging 'up there' with a bit of sway for movement. Thought about putting a black trash bag over a wire hanger with the blue cup atop that and dangling it out in the open, say on my clothesline or off a post ('hangman'-style) by the dock, compost pile, or shooting berms. I did buy (mouse) glue traps to spoon out the goo after hearing that spray-on tanglefoot is lacking, but haven't tried that out. (Didn't somebody wrap-on hanging fly strips?)

btw: I won't wear the hat anymore when hanging my wash on a breezy day ... well, not after gumming-up a t-shirt or pillow-case here & there. :ashamed: (life is a learning process ...)

Yup, it seems to be working okay...

I use Deer Fly Strips. They are flesh colored double sided tape that you put on the top of a dark colored ball cap. They buzz my face. I swat them away. They rise above me and see what they think is bare skin. They get stuck. Others see their kind getting a drink on bare skin and join them. At the end of a day I've had as many as three dozen of the little &#!@&! stuck on the tape dying a slow death.

Deer fly hang around my loader hydraulic cylinders, mostly near the warm grease at the ends. They like the smell of grease, or heat attracts them, maybe both.

I use Deer Fly Strips.

Ditto, I also use those and they work well. Available at Amazon, called "12 / Pk Deerfly Patches / TredNot Deer Fly Patch / Traps. Repellent Strips" for $7.80. A 12 pack gets me thru the Summer but they are available in larger quantities if needed.

Tried the blue cup with Tanglefoot goo this morning on our walk, and it worked great! Caught 8 flies in about 30 minutes, and a huge reduction in the annoyance factor. My wife is sold.

I put two slits in the cup and slid it over the strap at the back of my ball cap. About 3/4 of the cup was covered in goo, as well as the top.

Well done. :)

I wish all my experimental projects were this effective and this cheap.... Really nice to see an old-time simple fix work so well. Have to thank Baby Grand for posting the idea!!
