yard signs?

Back a few years (over a decade  ) the Local Fire Dept. bought 4" x 10" green reflective signs and used (3x3?) white reflective numbers and made them for many of the houses (per request,) the people I bought my farm from had installed a month or so prior to my buying it. It is aluminum and is screwed to my Mail box Post (underneath box.) My address is only 2 numbers so sign is little extra big but stands out for easy viewing even in dark with the reflective aspects.

Interesting fact the day I was there to look at the place 911 showed someone called from the address and 2 sheriffs showed up. The showed the same address but we were all pretty much outside looking at the property at the time... :/ Sheriffs said call came in at xx:xx time and they were there less than 5 min later so not bad for Rural area.

Here, before they set up the 911 system your address was just your name and a route number...no street names or numbers...

When they set up 911 all roads had to be named (signs installed by the county) and all properties were assigned numbers which must be displayed to the county's specifications...i.e., certain size and must be reflective etc...

same here in Ga, I think once a new address is registered to 911 you will receive a reflective number plate that is put into your Yard or next to your mailbox, the EMS looks for these sign plate to easily IDs your address, Perhaps you have something like this in the state /county you live in...

In my opinion your name should not be posted, just the civic number.

Think about it, thief drives by looks up 'Smith, 33 Main st.' in phone directory and since nobody answers he knows the house is vacant and safe to rob.

Other tricks; never leave the trash can roadside beyond collection day.
A closed gate also suggests nobody home. (my gate is open 24/7)

911 has caused a few problems for me and I live in a city with 400,000 + population.

A 41' x 125' corner city lot has 3 addresses... one on one street and two on the other street.

All the phone lines have the same MPO

Cost me two kicked in doors before the police realized the call came from around the corner.

42" solid panel doors and jambs don't come cheap and the police/city are exempt from liability if no negligence is involved.

After that, I've called 911 to verify they have my proper address... lord knows I've already paid a price.

A few years back our county installed a 911 reverse lookup system. Not long after a 2 yr. old up the canyon dialed 911 and the sheriff & EMTs responded to the little town 8 miles from here, rudely interrupting someone's dinner, I'm sure. It had a few kinks which we're assured have been put right.

Most of us don't have 'street' numbers, more like "third lane past the first cattleguard and then right after the creek" kind of addresses. There's no mail delivery and the UPS driver knows where everyone is so addresses are optional, some folks just make one up, I never bothered.

How can the police dept. possibly claim "no negligence" if they failed to verify the correct address and kicked in the wrong doors? Just another reason to move to the country IMHO.

The last package that was trucked in, my rear blade a few weeks ago, the guy called me for directions. I started telling him where I lived, he interrupted me and said that he remembered from last summer when he had delivered some patio furniture. Maybe just have to train each driver!
I don't have a mailbox, get it at the city post office box after work. Haven't seen any 'standard' signs (haven't seen any signs on the few neighbors I have). Called the Sheriffs Dept to see how they'd find us - they said calls are on GIS system, and they fax a map to the responding fire/ambulance unit.

I waited for years while the town went through the E-911 mapping system, naming roads and developing a numbering system, and finally came up with a number. I notified everyone (many, many folks) and then a year or so later they went through some kind of "disambiguation" process and changed the number! Gaaaaaah!

The police were dispatched on a 911 hang up... the women had misdailed 911 when she was dailing 011 for an international call... her home is on "Elm" street

The two other homes on the same property where the police gained entry are on "Oak" street.

Department policy is to investigate all 911 hang ups because someone could be laying on the floor unconscious..

Repair came in just at my deductible... I also learned one cannot just sue the city unless the city attourney has denied the claim and that can take a year...

You are right about city living...

...Department policy is to investigate all 911 hang ups because someone could be laying on the floor unconscious...

Most places have similar policies....on a side note...If anyone (most of use that still have land lines do) uses cordless telephones...there are a couple of different way those cordless phones can inadvertently dial 911...!

one is a faulty battery and the other is moisture getting into the hard line connections...

Be aware, if this happens you can expect a visit from the PD etc...and if they are not satisfied with talking to someone at the door of have any suspicions...they can come in and search your entire house without any type of warrant etc...
