I have an old Yanmar YM1610D. Only one gear range works and only first gear in this range works now. Other ranges and gears slip when under any kind of load at all. The PTO shifter is now difficult to move and seems to be connected to the positraction lever because when I move one, the other moves.

I have never changed the hydrallic fluid which is now 4 years old. (was newly changed when I bought it)

Any ideas where I should start to diagnose and If I break the tractor in 1/2 and tear apart the transmission, will parts be available and where?

THanks in advance, Steve

I am not that all familiar with your particular tractor but from many situations over the years with the kind of thing you are talking about, your fastest path to getting a fix is to open up from the top and trace things out. I have seen many a tractor fixed by finding a spring that has jumped off a shoulder, a clip that has become dislodged, a set screw come loose etc. One tractor a bearing on the gear shaft had worn just enough to allow some items to become misaligned. bearing was cheap, and once replaced an old tractor went for another 20 years. Some one with experience with your model might know how the pto and positraction levers are connected but what ever it is by the time it is doing what you describe you will need to be inside. I just chimed in to let you know that once I got over feeling powerless about it and dove in with some wrenches it was a piece of cake on several different tractor driveline situations.

If you get it resolved please share you info.

Post this in the Yanmar forum and you'll get some advice.

In particular that linked PTO/Difflock problem was solved by someone there recently: those shafts meet inside the transmission and one runs concentric inside the other. In his case they had rusted together. This pointed to neglected maintenance, there should never be that much condensation in there.

Have you replaced the transmission fluid and cleaned the filter screen? That might be a place to start. These transmissions are generally bulletproof aside from neglected maintenance.

Post over at the Yanmar section. There are some people there who may be able to help.
