I wanna say my first 146 only had zerks in the rim. My GT and the other 146 have them only in the center hub.

I always assumed they changed the rim design to the hub after some front wheel bearing failures, but who knows.

If its less than 5", its gotta be a 48" then.

A piece of advice from the guy who sold me my two YCM's after rebuilding both (and having to source each part with no part numbers), don't cut wet grass with them, ever. I would assume that's why he had to rebuild them both.

Well spent some time this evening cleaning up my new ride. Bad news....had it idling for a good while and noticed the smell of antifreeze.....no leaks on the ground...hoses look good....then I saw where it was seeping from one side of the head......I was cleaning the mower at that point so I went ahead and washed down the motor since I figured I was going to have to replace the head gasket (only that, if I am lucky)....the motor was running as I was cleaning.....and I left it running another 15 minutes or so as I dried it off.....no more seepage??? Did the motor getting hot swell enough to stop it?? I am guessing once it cools down it will start leaking???

Big question is "How did I miss this when I was inspecting it???" The old saying is wisdom comes from experience....after repairing this one...I will make sure I check for leaks on the next one...

I am going to check it again tomorrow.....I think the mower has set up for a year or more ...from the looks below the head I am guessing this has been an on going problem...lack of paint and rust in the area makes me think that.....

Wouldn't you know....just finished ordering from Hoye today all the filters and a manual and now I got to go back and reorder....

My projects are never easy!

Not cool. I hope head gaskets are still available for them... Never looked.

If Hoye doesn't, try Jamiesons. He owns a gt and may have squirreled away some stuff.

Is the GT and 146 the same mower?? Do the parts interchange??? Asking just in case I find a donor along the way......

Have an email into Hoye ....will call Jamieson if they don't have it.....

the YM146,YM14 and GT14 are the same, the YM142 i also think is still a 2cylinder whereas the YM122 and 126 are 1 cylinders. the frames and sheet work are all the same.even all the holes are in all the panels to suit all models and country codes. i have a YM14 which is the same minus the hydraulics(dunno why they decided that, but anyway) if you need info on something i have the complete manuals including the 1cyl models.

/ Yanmar ym146 #26
Correct. All the same, but Ive never seen a 142. I know they made them, just never saw one.

Thanks Neat...good info.

Another question....my rubber bumbers under the seat are really big....about 3-4" tall.....can you send me a pic of what yours look like....I suspect these are just some the po replaced with what was available. the frame on my seat is broken from where the rear is too high and putting too much pressure up front....I want to put the right ones on if it is different. thanks

Good news...no problem on head gaskets etc....

Sweet! Good to know about head gaskets and such. How much $ if you don't mind me asking?

I could theoretically get my GT14 up and running again then... :D

I ordered a rubber bumper set for my first YM when I first bought it, from Jamiesons. They should be yellow and about 2" tall. I can get pics when I get home.

Around $30 for the gasket

Those bumpers appear to be all the same, at least for the YM1400 And Ym2000 on the Hoye site. You could always cut them down, or as I did, swap them for a set of generic exhaust manifold flange springs, 1 1/2", at any parts store. Install with a fender washer and screw a rubber table leg boot on the end to protect the seat. Works great.

This is the best I have without pulling one out and snapping a pic. Jamieson's have them and they're actually reasonable on the price for these.

Mine are similiar to Norms, rocker arm valve springs attached with washers and a wooden plug and rubber gorilla glued to top of springs. Little softer ride than the rubber bumpers. Had to experiment with the wooden plug to achieve the perfect height.

Thanks Norm and Winston, I appreciate the good option. May use something like this for every day and keep the originals for down the road.

Wonder why a yellow colored bumper?? I can see where yours is shorter than mine....I have been talking with Gary and will get the originals ....but the yellow color would not have been my first choice.:D

Is this seat supposed to rock back and forth on the hinge?? Just does not seem stable??

Got my Hoyts box in today...unfortunately I am out of town so will be tomorrow before I can see my goodies.

Have to work all weekend so no sure when I am going to get the chance to pull the head off. Mowed a little grass before I left and was impressed with the way it cut. Looked better than my craftsman.

i ditched all that stuff and made a box tube frame and fitted an adjustable seat on it so the hugs n kisses could use it as well. her feet wouldnt reach the pedals before i did this.;) so in effect i dont have any cushioning under the seat but i cant notice any difference in its ride. i think you will find the previous owners prolly did their own mods so its hard to compare. mine was fairly original apart from some wiring butchery which i have now fixed.

Not sure why the color is what it is, but that's how they came... :licking:

Niether one of my seats rock with me sitting on them at all. My third tractor has a "home made" seat like Neats' I would guess in that it used no bumpers, but the seat itself is sprung, like the truck driver's had before they went to air ride seats. I think I already posted a picture of that one on this thread.

I wouldn't drive one of these very fast without some sort of suspension under my backside. They can ride rough at full speed on the bumps.

Well got the head off and took it to the machine shop....head looks good so no worry there.

I have the radiator at the shop to test and clean......

Took a few pictures of the cylinder and top of engine.....look like 280 hours??

That is supposed to be the hours on the motor.

1- saw alot of stuff on the water pump fan....hard as a rock....turns fine just has this build up....this normal?? I think it sat up for a year before I bought it.

2- Valve cover almost looks like it was not a solid piece but may out of a tube??this normal??

Thanks for any input....bought a parts manual today so will have a better idea of what goes where....

Pistons sure don't have alot of carbon on them, that's for sure..

My guess with the water pump is they probably used tap water instead of the proper stuff. Mineral deposits probably.

I'd have to look at my GT14 valve cover, it's off the engine.

Just looked at what I wrote on the valve cover notes..just to make myself clear ....I meant the gasket on the bottom looks more like it was made with a something out of a tube rather than a solid gasket..I can see some run off in side the value cover.......there were lips/edges on the outside.......I was scared to try and pull it off...but it maybe a solid gasket...just hard to tell....

/ Yanmar ym146 #39
Well, once you get the new gasket in, you can let us all know. ;)

Well have put the 146 back together and I think she is running fine....I am guessing these diesels are supposed to shake alot at low rpms, right?? Once I give it some more throttle it smooths on out. Does not seem to reach as high a rpm as my 187???

No leaks so far....working on the deck now so by the weekend should be able to get some mowing time in....should get a good idea if I have fixed my leaking head gasket problem.

I have little knowledge of diesels....never had one until the 187 I bought last year and this 146. How can I tell if the engine is operating correctly?? From all I can tell it runs fine....just not 100% sure it is running at full capacity? As I mentioned above does not seem to go as high rpm as the 187.....and not sure about all the power being there...I am assuming a pressure test on the cylinders would be my best bet??

thanks,
