Question on changing my oil in my tiller. From what I can find searching on here I need to change the oil in 2 places on the tiller -- the gear box which has a dipstick on top in the center of the tiller and also the chain box which has a dipstick on top on the side of the tiller. Both of these take 90 wt gear oil.....if any of this is incorrect please let me know.

My questions are where are the drains for these?

Gear box -- is this plug right below and to the side of where the PTO attaches?

Chain box -- is this plug down at the bottom of the chain box?

How much oil does it take to fill each place?

I read where one person fills the chain box with diesel and turns it a few times, then drains and fills with 90 weight. Is this common? It is really white in there right now.

Thanks for any help.

I run an older German made tiller, but they all are of similar design. My particular tiller has no drain plug on the chain box. You have to remove the side cover to drain it. This was well worth the look inside. The roller chain and sprockets are massive, I mean I could not believe my eyes. Unbelievable. The gear box on the top sounds similar to yours and yes, that is the drain. I have no information on my tiller, but added enough SAE 90 in the chain box to bath the bottom half of the lower sprocket. This is more than enough. When running and with the add plug removed, it is spraying everywhere inside the box. The upper gear box is the same as a differential, even with the bottom of the add plug hole.

A Yanmar-brand tiller? it was probably used in rice paddies and that white is water mixed with the oil.

When I bought my 30 year old Yanmar tiller I was advised to use gear lube, 90/140 or similar. He said fill the differential to the plug. For the side gears, any level you can reach with a dipstick approximately 6 inches long is fine.

When I asked here about the lower bearing over on the opposite, non gear side, I was advised by a dealer that its a sealed bearing and it is a good idea to replace it before using the tiller much, because it will cause unrepairable damage if it seizes.

Yes it is a yanmar tiller, here is a pic of it. I don't know the model number but it is 5', give or take a few inches. I am sure that is where the water came from. As much as I used it last year I can't believe it didn't seize up.

I have arrows pointing to where I am draining the oil from. Is this the correct place?

Thanks

Is that a chain box on the side--it does not look like mine which is chain. That looks like it is a gear drive unit.

What you pointed out look like drains to me and then Svc guy's recommendations on filling is what I would do. Looks good.

Looks the same as mine. I drained and refilled mine this last Fall. If you have it mounted on the tractor you can lift it up and the upper one drains without making too much of a mess plus you're pretty sure of getting everything out of there. I sprayed a bit of break cleaner in there to flush out any loose stuff.

Anyone know if that lower bearing on the opposite side is available?
