how do you know it was just 440? does it turn over at 100hrs? it only has 3 digits plus the 1/10th number, so what happens when it gets to 1000

It flips back to all 000's no way of realy knowing. Many people including dealers will sell A tractor stating those hours as actual when they have know way of proving that. The goverment does not regulate machinery like they do cars. They Should. I got taken on that one. The best thing to do is check it out is the
clutch adjusted all the way? The brakes adjusted all the way. Smell the exuast.
does it smell like oil burning? Check the electrics. Things like that. Those things would not likely not be bad on a -1000 hour tractor. By the pic you took it looks like 1000+ machine but tough call. I'd buy the tractor with one or two of those things wrong. Its not a bad price. Its a $2200+ dollor tractor. plus a $300 - 500
brush mower. So if you got to put a few bucks in it you still got a deal. also being a us tractor any yanmar usa dealer can supply parts and work on it. Plus many if not all gray dealers can also.

Some of them have hour meters that read into the 1000s place, but mine doesn't. It read 140 hours when I bought it. I asked the dealer if he knew what it actually was and he said we think it is 1140, which is what I figured. It could be 2140. If it was maintained and is running well, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Also, my hour meter doesn't operate in "real time". If it is just idling it turns much slower than your watch would. You need to hit a certain RPM level for it to turn over the same as your watch. Most of the experienced people on this forum feel a Yanmar will go 4000-5000 hours without needing an overhaul. So, I figure even if I average 2 hours a week (100 hours a year), it will go another 30 or 40 years before needing one. And by then I will either be too old to be messing with tractors or dead! So hopefully it will turn out to be a good investment.

The YM2000B meter goes to 10,000 hours, chances are, it is correct. Yours and most others only go to 1,000 and starts over at zero. Your YM165 is pretty rough, I suspect it may have turned over at least once.
